Dhol dhagga skin & maintenece
« on: December 24, 2011, 04:50:48 PM »
Got a new kaali talli shell from india and i want to put on a new dhagga skin but i dont know how to 'Burn' the holes can anyone tell me how to?
And i want to make sure the sound is mint and it looks god so im going to oil the outside with mustard oil but a friend also told me to oil the inside aswell is this a good idea.
Last question should i sand the inside to make it smooth-will this improve the sound of the dhol?
Thanks

don`t bother oiling the inside since it has most likely already been oiled on the inside just oil it on the outside 1 or 2 times in 2-3 hour intervals to give it a temporary natural varnish finish, personally I would prefer to masala the inside but this can only be done during the summer

and also sanding the inside smooth is a good idea so that way the sound can travel more without being sucked up by the grooves and It`ll be a little bit louder if you want a bit more info about this then heres the thread and read amrinder13`s posts he`s like an expert about dhols  http://bhangrateamsforum.com/discuss/main-bhangra-discussion/dhol-makeover/

Best way is to let the dagga soak in warm water so the skin becomes soft, I just used a screw driver and pierced the holes, just make sure you evenly mark where to pierce the skins.

Ideally you should piece the skins as you rope it to get a good judgement.
Hope that helps

the masala can only be done when it is hot outside with lots of sunshine, and to be honest its not going to make a difference if you oil it on the inside it might actually screw up the sound if you don`t know how much to put and again this should only be done when it is hot outside with lots sun and since its winter you can just put the hooks and ropes, and dagga, thili on right now because it`ll sound the same even without the oil, then wait till summer comes around and oil it up, or masala it then so that way the dhol can absorb the ingredients and get a bit sun to help the process
