for all the dholis...please help!!
« on: March 17, 2011, 05:59:33 AM »
so i have a situation, ive been wanting to learn dhol and every time i pick up the dhol i play for couple mins and get frustrated and put it back cuz i get no where. the reason is when i first bought a dhol i didnt know anything about it, and im right handed but started off with playin the daaga with my right hand and the tilli with my left hand. when i try to play with daaga on left side it jus doesnt work cuz im use to playin it the other way. so the help i need from the dholis is how can i switch to havin the daaga side to my left and the tilli to the right?

if you feel comfortable playing dhugga with the right and tilli on the left then keep playing that way  :D  no need to switch hands and stuff  :P

yeah, like gdholi7 said, as long as you're more comfortable with playing the dagga side with your right hand and tilli with your left, there's no need to switch around. And also, since you're a righty, you could probably get a better boom sound from your dagga side since your right hand has more power than your left. Trust me, I wish I could play the dagga with my right hand lol. And as for practicing, you should watch some of the tutorials they have up on youtube and start real slow so that you can get a hang of the beats and progress from there so that it sounds neat, meaning that each beat should stand out on it's own, rather than sounding messy.

But the thing is when I play tilli with left hand it's so off cuz I'm right handed. And isn't the tilli side more important to be played like as in isn't the tilli side the side that makes the beat sound good?  And if that's true shouldn't i play it with my right hand since it's the stronger hand?

And I'm sure you guys can tell I don't know much about dhol since I'm not using the correct terms and all, but I'll learn more as I go on.

ok i am right handed so there fore since my right is in more use i use that hand to play the thili side

and now my left hand i use that for the dugga at first it`s going to seem complicated because your hand cordination is just starting to develop and enough you`ll be able to make a booming sound on your dugga and a nice sharp sound on your thili

but this just does`nt happen overnight

so practice makes perfect

it's true that the tilli side makes the beat, but the dagga side is what makes it sound better. it's more important that you hear the dagga side stronger than the tilli for most beats.

theres a lot of variations, and you usually hit the dagga side softer on classical dhol beats, so it really depends. since you're just learning dhol, it's best that you decide which side you want to use now because you will eventually get used to it

someone told me that putting mustard oil on the inside and outside of the dhol barrel will make a difference in the sound? can anyone confirm that?

I remember my cousin in India used to do that to tune his dhol.

I remember him putting it on his hand, then rubbing around the dagga side, then he put it in the sun for a little bit and let it dry in his room

I believe it conditions the wood providing nutrients but some woods like kali taali need to be oiled every 5 months i heard to keep the wood from drying out     but if your putting mustard oil on the dhol don`t put more than 2 coats on the inside if you wanna put more than 2 coats then only do so on the outside as it will protect the wood

i sanded the varnish off of my dhol a couple of months back and i need a way to seal it without having to put laquer or varnish or paint . you ever see those kaali taali dhols ustads use and you notice how shiny the wood is well it`s not varnish or laquer its the mustard oil coating on the outside you can get this on the outside with more than 5 coats of mustard oil on the outside of the barrel but if you do any more than 2 coats on the inside then i hope your patient because your gonna have to leave it to dry for a long time  and all coats should be applied in a 2 hour interval in case you were wondering

ehhh calijatt,

Im right handed too and When I first picked up the dhol, i had this guy that used to come over and teach me and he taught me to play right side dagga and left side tilli and i was horrible. It just didn't feel good. After 2 lessons i told him to stop coming and ended up learning how to play by myself. I switched over in learning with left side dagga and right side tilli. The way i did it was, and the way i think you should do it to is go very very slowly. When you play chal, play it slowly until you get the hand of hitting everything correctly. Don't rush yourself cause at the same time you got to build your stamina.. So play it slowly over and over again. Until you feel confident, play it a bit faster and get used to that. Once you've mastered it a bit faster, go a bit more faster..... You should eventually get used to playing left side dagga and ride side tilli. But the key thing is don't rush yourself. It will take some time.... but you'll get there.... :)
