How To Teach Someone The Bhangra "Hop"
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:21:52 PM »
Recently I've been trying to help a friend learn a few bhangra moves and it's been difficult.

The little hop we do with the leg were not using. I was wondering if anyone could help explain it so I can explain it to my friend properly. I've been doing bhangra for quite a while and I don't even remember when I picked up on it to be honest. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about and can help out !

Thanks in advance :)

OK. I've done this with a lot of random non-bhangra people and telling them to "jump on the AND" has never worked. They end up doing weird Raas-like hops side to side instead of swinging their weight. Here's what you do.

1. Get them to sway side to side. Sway RIGHT on 1, LEFT on 2, RIGHT on 3, LEFT on 4.
2. They should be swinging/swaying side to side on each beat, without moving feet from the ground. Get them to sway slightly more.
3. Sway slightly MORE until the foot leaves the ground a little bit.
4. They should basically have 75% of the bhangra skip/hop at this point. You'll add a little mini jump on the beat to complete the basic motion.

I've taught at least 4 dances of non-bhangra dancers (actually, NON DANCERS) this way, and it's worked a lot better than anything else.

If it's worked like you said in the past then there's no reason it won't work now, thanks for the help guy !
It would make life a bit easier if someone just made a video and posted it up.

They key is that their supporting leg (not the one in the air) the heel shouldn't touch the ground.  I find if I reiterate this, people get the hop, it's hard NOT to hop on your toes!  Best of luck =)

What I've found helps is to explain that you first hop and land on your right foot only, then hop and land on both feet, hop again and land on left foot only, then hop and land together again. repeating "right foot, together, left foot, together" and just doing it slowly for a while in front of the person learning has worked the best for me. The point Bharathi made about staying on the balls of your feet is super important b/c otherwise they'll never get the bounce feeling and to them it'll seem like they're just stepping from 1 side to the other. Once they have the rhythm down, then I work on introducing counts "and 1 and 2" etc. Last step is to pick a slower song for them to first try it out to, then once they get comfortable you can take it from there. Good luck!
In life, chill for best results.

one thing i find useful is to ask the learner to imagine that his or her knee, when being brought into the air, "pulls up" the rest of his or her body as well. for example, when you're doing punjab, the knee that you raise into the air "drags" you upwards, so that you hop right as it reaches the peak of its movement. this concept is a useful one to keep in mind on any high knee moves. this, when coupled with the balls of you feet thing that bharathi mentioned, usually helps them get it.

if they're really incorrigible, ask them to just skip back and forth. roughly, the way you hop while skipping is the same as the bhangra hop (i.e., hopping when your knee is in the air)

in an attempt to teach this to a new dancer who had never done bhangra before in her life, i actually managed to actually make her forget how to even skip...

This is dhamaka/pataka/sheesha footwork.  Its not a step, just a definition of the footwork that is used with previous step and is used throughout the dance.

the video deepi posted is of dhamaka/sheesha footwork, like the one in this video:

Dhamaka

but i thought that the original question BBC asked was how to get people learning bhangra to sort of "skip" or lift their weight off the ground using only their foot at the end of each beat. something like the jumps these guys are doing with their supporting leg while their other is kicking out, or the one that you do when transitioning between beats while doing punjab:
