Kali taali dhols from Punjab
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:43:38 PM »
So I was ordering a dhol from India and I asked my mamma from PAU CoA. He talked to his ustad (not sure who), and he said there is some ustad that most dholis that I mentioned to him  (Bittu, Meshi, Kukki) learned from. That ustad said you're not going to easily find kali taali dhols in Punjab, and not many ustads are willing to sell them for under 15000-20000 rupees even if you can find them because they're too expensive and have to be ordered from outside of Punjab.

When my mamma said that my friends have ordered kali taali dhols from ustads in India, that ustad said most of the time when people tell you the wood is kali taali, it's really akhrot (walnut) wood.

Does anyone know about this? and I'm also wondering... how good is akhrot for dhols? I remember reading a post saying that it's better than taali, but I don't know & I always thought akhrot was more expensive than taali. I asked him to reconfirm with his ustad and he said the same thing again.

cool thanks. I'm still confused as ever on what kind of dhol to get lol but I think all the dholis from ludhiana are related to each other and have the same source for their dhol woods. my mammas going to find out what the best one is nowadays.

& he said he's going to go see bittu tomorrow to check about kali taali dhols.
He went to janak raj's yesterday & the dhol he was using (pure desi kali taali with goat skin on both sides) sells for about 50,000 rupees from ustads. janak raj doesnt sell dhols anymore.

btw janak raj is the ustad thats related to bittu & meshi. he taught both of them how to play

yeah but still 50,000 rupees for a dhol ? I would never buy a dhol for more than $600 oh and btw if you have trouble with getting a pure kali taahli, then a dhol with a little bit of chitti in it won`t affect the sound at all even if the dhol is like 70 percent kali taahli I don`t notice any difference in sound, I remember their was a thread of this guy trying to sell dhols for $800 LOL and I remember one of the guys saying that ustad lal singh bhatti said to never spend more than I believe $650 on a dhol   but still bro almost 1 grand for a dhol it better have the best woodgrain on earth and the best sound on earth from a dhol with a bass that`ll shatter bricks...

thanks for that link I'm gonna check out his dhols too.

& yeah that's 50k rupees for a dhol just like janak raj's. I'm sure its really good, but I wouldn't spend that much either lol.
I went to ustad lal singh bhatti's house recently, and he has good dhols as well. I can get one from him for about $400 last resort. I'm not too picky with the wood type or how the dhol looks as long as it sounds good. I'll let everyone know how my dhol search goes in case you guys want one as well & I'll post a video if I can get one.
