I mean is it taped together or nailed or what ?

any of the following work: Tape, thumbtacks, glue, twine, solder, melting.

but really, just tie it tight and then maybe a couple of layers or clear tape or use those flathead thumbtacks.

I honestly would avoid thumbtacks. If one falls out, someone can step on it. Last time I checked, stepping on thumbtacks isn't the best feeling in the world.

buoyancy is not always necessary for flotation, i know these videos show movement across water, but if you want to get really technical you could build a machine that would systematically "hit" the water with multiple piston type devices, and at a certain frequency this machine would "float" on water without utilizing buoyancy.

That's not floating then. Walking on water is not the same as floating. Hell, even certain dictionaries will define floating as "being buoyed or suspended in water". No buoyancy, no floating.
