Apna Virsa: Bhangra Fusion is now accepting team applications.  This competition will take place on Feb. 27, 2010 (Saturday). It will take place at The Gallo Center for Arts in Modesto, Ca.  This competition is brought to you by FTW Entertainment and Asian Entertainment.

Our goal at this competition is to focus on the Upbeat, High Energy rhythm, tempo, and style of modern Bhangra.  A special emphasis is placed on music selection and incorporating/fusing bhangra with western culture and music.  I understand many of you here on BTF are die hard bhangra fanatics, and sometimes it may seem that modern bhangra routines are 'poser routines.' However, having attended many bhangra competitions myself, I find nothing more exhilerating than seeing a solid team dance to a song that I listen to frequently, especially if that song is remixed with hip hop that's topping the charts right now.  Our judging rubric will not have extra points awarded or a 'traditional' aspect, the main emphasis will be on the pure energy and what gets the crowd roaring.  Other than that, they will be similar to regular competitions.

That being said, there is still a place for traditional bhangra at our competition, since it is the essence of bhangra.  We hope to have 1-2 traditional teams as exhibition teams, who will not have to pay a registration fee to perform in the competition.

We hope to have a very fun & interesting competition/afterparty.  As this is our first competition, I ask of all you 'pioneers' on here to give your input and help us out. In sticking with our modern theme, we will have Manak-E headlining, since some of his 'original' songs are actually remixes with hip hop music.  I understand he has done many shows in Cali lately, but unless we find someone to better fit our theme, he will be it. The theater itself is beautiful and seats 1200+. The afterparty is at one of the established clubs downtown, with 950+ capacity and will feature two different floors with hip hop & Indian music. Traveling teams will be comp'd 2 rooms at the local hotel, transportation will be provided.  There will also be a team mixer the night before with dinner provided and reception where the team spots will be picked.

I think I may have confused you guys. This is definitely going to be a Bhangra competition. Westcoast doesn't really do "fusion" in the abstract dance sort of way.  By fusion I mean bhangra music remixed with today's hip hop. It's still bhangra, purely bhangra. I just find (with no offense intended because I can tell how much work and dedication goes into live teams who sing their own music) that traditional bhangra music is kind of boring. It doesn't get your toes tapping and heart pumping like the modern remixed music.

The only way our competition is different is that teams aren't awarded points for going the traditional route. In most competitions, teams will try to get that extra ten% of points by throwing in a boliyan, or some type of purely traditional bhangra routine to woo over the judges.

For example, bulldog bhangra is all the buzz on the forums right now.  The traditional team should have won it because they're judging off of a traditional rubric.  However, the teams that REALLY got the crowd into the performance and screaming were the teams that had modern, remixed music.  Now as diehard bhangra enthusiasts, I understand traditional bhangra takes the cake because you can tell how much work and dedication goes into those routines.  But for the general population, modern bhangra is what makes the shows worth coming to, in my opinion.

-How did Manak-E mess up pioneer? Not defending him or anything, but we were not able to attend that comp and want to know every aspect to make this a bigger and better show.

question: if bhangra isn't done based off 'traditional bhangra' from punjab, is it truly bhangra?  what is 'modern bhangra' based off?

I'm glad youre changing the name.  Apna Virsa, Apna Virsa Apna Punjab, and Bhangra Fusion all already exist.
