Best dancer in competitions
« on: November 10, 2009, 12:22:11 AM »
Hi guys, I'm fairly new to the bhangra scene and had a question about how do the judges decide the best dancer of the night in bhangra competitions? I mean what do they look for, execution, style etc. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks

At most competitions, it's a rigged award. There's no way the judges know everyone's name at a competition. Even if they're like, "Damn, that chick is good. I think she should win", the logistics of telling a competition organizer who it is (ie: perhaps "green jodi on Team X") and having them find them is not practical or realistic. Some teams may not even be rangla making tracking down the girl much harder. I feel that judges may default to people they know on teams and give them the awards, even if they're not the absolute best.

Just my thoughts on the process. It has absolutely nothing to do with who has won the award, the logistics just don't make it a fair award to be given out. In my opinion, the award is the worst thing to happen to bhangra competitions. The overall point of a bhangra competition is to see which teams can dance like a team, why award those who stick out?

For some competitions though, right after the team performs the hosts ask them to come to the front of the stage and say their names. So im guessing they do that so the judges can find out who everyone was in order to pick the best dancer.

For Allstars, the judges eyed Onki, and the organizers asked me his name.  They searched him out, which usually does not happen (like kinnel said).  It's usually like in canada, where they call out the names after each performance...

Kinnell, I totally agree that competitions should not have Best Male/Female Dancer Award because in my eyes, every dancer has their own unique style and it certainly can put differences between individuals.

However, I disagree with you when you say it’s the most rigged award. Depending on the judge, he/she might know names of dancers that stand out the most or are able to pin point an individual in a certain Jodi.

Faizan, the judges knew that the dancer on AEG in a Green Vardi was Onkar but we just wanted to be sure because sometimes Roster Names could be different than their real names as I have seen it at our past Bhangra Masti Competitions.

Right after you perform, you tell the judges your name

Yea, I think sometimes judges do ask for the names like after a performance I've had a stage hand that was all headsetted out ask me for my name.. not that I'm saying I was ever contemplated for a best dancer award lol I'm just saying..! (Although I did pick up a fake Oscar that says World's Greatest Dancer.. I put it by my bed :))

Winning a best dancer award... obviously means that the person was really good, on point, good stamina, grace, and I would say the most important thing would be your nakhra to set you apart from the other dancers.  Some people try to stand out by putting their own flavour into it and being stars on a team but I don't think that's really the way to go as you are supposed to dance like the rest of your teammates, and if you're that good you should bring them up to your level.  Not so sure I like the best dancer award idea.  I'm attention loving enough that I would be happy to get one but it's really just a diss on your team.. and you because you're part of that team.  That's just how I feel, no offence to anyone that's won one before.
Insert something really cool and profound about bhangra here.
