This should all be answered in the rubric. Any competition whether old or new..if they were to release a statement like this, you would have to wait for the rubric to get the answer to many of your questions...even then...competitions that have been around forever..still have terribly vague rubrics...its not the like the judges even read the rubric carefully as is evidence by some of the history of terrible placings..thats a whole other story...my point is...you can come at competition organizers from a whole slew of angles...I feel bad for them. The point of the elaboration on what they were looking for...was simply to "nicely" say...that they are looking for more modern teams...plain and simple. I don't understand why this organizer is being berated so heavily for their attempt at clarity...Many competitions...won't even let you see a finished scored rubric..let alone attempt to clarify what they were looking for before they started.

My point..give the organization a break.....damn...let them breathe...I feel like the fact that this comp came right out and said its looking for modern teams is actually the root of all the negative comments towards this competition...give the comp some credit for saying it flat out.

Jeeti, I understand what you're saying. You're right, there could have been a better way for FTW do describe their competition. From my pov, there was no attempt at clarifying anything. Instead of telling us what this competition WILL NOT be, elaborate on what the goal of the competition WILL BE. Its a complete turn off when you say "points will not be given to traditional teams" but its "STILL" a bhangra competition. Who says that? This is STILL a bhangra competition. Something like traditional elements not being given points belongs in the rubric (in a much more diplomatic way) rather than being in your opening statement. Great, you said its going to be modern and heavy emphasis on hip hop in your remix. I think "traditional" teams can take the hint and determine whether this competition is for them or not. I don't think you're gonna have teams like kohinoor saying "hmmmmmm this is a modern comp with hip hop, and we're a live team, LETS GO GUYS!!!!" My point being, you're a first year competition, FTW, don't come to a bhangra forum with complete ignorance turning people off. You're advertising your show to teams, sell it, and present it properly. This is the reason why nobody complains about BRUIN or SOCAL because they pinpoint the highlights of their show. Its a given that these are not "traditional" competitions, but people still go to it.

It was definitely not a very professional way of wording exactly what the competition is trying to get across...I agree with you Meistro...they should have focused on what the competition is, instead of what it isn't..

FTW...before posting more details about the competition...show some tact...re-read it a few times...make sure you are getting your point across as concisely and releasing information on a "need-to-know" basis...because believe it or not, there are so many teams across the nation looking for competitions...that you don't need to sell the comp...you are going to get applications.

Regardless, as a first time comp...I applaud your willingness to receive advice and input from this community and hope you continue to do so in the future...we are more than willing to help..there is a good group of people on here that have been on either or both sides of the coin (organizer or dancer)...I am sure you will find their input invaluable.

I feel like this competition is going through some of the same issues Anil went through with Desi Dhamaka. Once DD happened, people shut up...and were supportive of the competition. So run a good competition FTW, treat teams like they should be treated (give them everything they could need to put on a good show), and you're set. The audience will come out, just make it on time, and good.

I appreciate all of your guys' input and insight regarding the competition.  Please bear in mind that in no way am I trying to come across as egotistic and vain and the last thing I want to do is turn teams away from our competition, whether they are traditional or modern teams.  You guys are right, I did come across vague in my description.

That being said, I would like to quote Swi in saying that we "don't want teams to do stuff just for the sake of points or traditionality....it's not penalizing traditional teams, it's keeping everything even." I would like to encourage all teams to look over the rubric and apply.  Everything will be done to ensure competent judges are selected and the competition is run and judged fairly

Make no mistake, this is a bhangra competition and our selection process will ensure that.  If all teams who applied were allowed to compete, then this may not be a bhangra competition, but we will make sure there are no squaredancing, salsa/meringue, or polka dancing teams competing  ;) .  There will be bhangra teams and only bhangra teams competing.

Please keep the suggestions and comments coming, but keep everything constructive. We count on the input of this bhangra community to run a successful and entertaining show!
