People's Choice Awards at Competitions
« on: December 08, 2009, 12:55:59 AM »
How do competitions determine the winner of a "people's choice award" or something of the sort?  We've looked into SMS voting, but are there other options?

have you ever watched the show "wildin' out?" they have that ish that captures the noise of the audience, which is then shown on a spectrogram.  it will then read the frequency and volume of the crowd and show you on a monitor which team is generating the most noise in the audience.  its a pretty legit device, and when shown onto a projector, it would really enhance audience participation.  Also, Sapan Gandhi rocks my socks.

I think most comps have judges keep a look out for the best dancer... and after the performance is done, every member has to introduce themselves on stage before they leave and so that the judges can write down names for who they feel is best suited for the award.

However i think there should be a better method too choose them, but Ive seen most comps just have the judges pick.

I don't like Best Dancer Awards and let me tell you why: Judges are human and the competition is live: we cannot rewind a youtube video.

We watch the dance once, live, and must score each team as accurately as we can.

I'd rather devote 100% of my concentration and focus to reviewing the 10-15 aspects of the dance the rubric is asking me about, than specifically keeping an eye out for who is the best during this dance, Male and Female, and tracking them through the dance to make sure I'm not missing a better dancer.  If you want the most accurate placings as possible, let the judges concentrate on that.

People's Choice is a gimmick but it's fun and involves the audience, so sure, why not.  SMS is fine.  Applause-o-meter is probably more difficult logistically to set up (equipment, software, projection, etc..).  Just set up the SMS service, and

SET IT AND FORGET IT!!

I did sms texting for a competition I ran here in cleveland. It's easy and the most accurate way to gauge audience opinion. Really easy to set-up and its really not THAT expensive. Results are also live and instantaneous.

Definitely a great way to announce the codes before the judging act and then have your judging act while people vote.
