Dheerja, I suggest you take those sorts of antiquated views elsewhere. This is a progressive forum. LOL.So I was actually waiting for someone to ask this...a) How often and how long depend on where your team members are located and what their work schedules or student schedules are like. For example, if team members are all located outside of the same city, practices are likely to be on weekends, and as a result, segmented into fewer, but slightly longer practices, rather than shorter practices during M-F. It's tough to commute on a weeknight. Additionally, whether your members work from 9 am-5 pm (or 9 am-5 am!), or have evening classes can also affect a weeknight practice schedule. As Kinnell mentioned, technology can help out here -- SMD's done the video choreo thing in the past and while it's not optimal, it's certainly helpful in a pinch. And for the reasons above, we tend to have practices on Sat and Sun because that's what works with our girls' schedules. b) Ask a roster to commit for six months of the year and delineate a practice schedule, but know that dropouts (injuries, unexpected family issues, etc.) will likely occur. We've never tried having an "understudy", mostly because most people that are working/in grad school want to commit to a team if they're going to have the chance to perform. The only suggestion I can make here is to situate your team in an an area (preferably a metropolis) where bhangra dancers are freely available, because you have a larger pool of folks to choose from in the event that you need someone to pinch-hit. While long-distance choreo may work for some, my belief is you truly have to have all 8,10,12 members of your team at practice in order to get any kind of consistency. My two cents -- hope that helps!
1. Don't fall into the trap of learning by video and having 2 practices as a team...it rarely is successful. Avoid it like a the plague.
People, especially girls, should not dance after graduation. They should get married and make roti.
Toronto has established itself as the Jersey Shore for Punjabis.
How about getting married, making roti and still doing competitive bhangra? Now that's a thought.

but yes, we meet up about 2 times a week for about 2 hrs each, everyone comes to practices and if no one can make it in the evenings, we hold 5am practices. Most of our team works and goes to school, we make it happen.
I'd also suggest finding a team that is efficient during practices....hahahha...You do not want to get on a team where practices drag out and you waste time... Probably most importantly is what FG said regarding time management...there is plenty time in a day for everything...hell, if you are a time management beast..you can do multiple things in a week...not just bhangra, but most of us are not so fortunate to be that skilled at time management...Bottom line - Get in and Get out...if you wanna dance, make sure you aren't wasting any time elsewhere.
