Post Grad Bhangra?
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:37:46 AM »
Hey All,

So i know i can say for myself, I'm just a gujju kid who didnt know much about bhangra prior to being on a collegiate bhangra team, but now love it

I also know ton of people continue their passion for Bhangra and being on a team after graduation, such as an independent team...

But i was sorta wondering, how people tackle the responsibilities of the real world along with the insanely hectic life of a Bhangra team member who competes here and there

I know of many people on independent teams with full time jobs, some even married with kids, and still handling it all

so long story short

a) how often/how long do these independent teams practice

and

b) how do they decide who's competing and who isn't, what if a member has to back out last minute due to other obligations

Depends on individual's circumstances, the team's circumstances and the competitions that they do.

One of my LJM dancers is a first year medical school student in New York. As a team in Cleveland, we have few legit dancers so we were happy to learn that he was willing to learn via video despite his medical school obligations. He is one of the few people I know that I can trust 100% to learn all of the choreo and formations. Recruiting non-Cleveland dancers has NOT been a good experience for the team, but I will continue to ask this dancer for all of our competitions because of his work ethic (his circumstance) and our team's circumstances. Matt Mcshane is a baller.

Other teams may require that you show up to all of their practices, especially if they have high school or college students in their local area. Mera Punjab from Bhangra Nation this year only had two college students - the rest of them have graduated, are working, are married or have kids. But having dancers who have competed a lot helps since they really know how to make the best out of practices so they can still keep up with day to day obligations.

Dheerja, I suggest you take those sorts of antiquated views elsewhere. This is a progressive forum. LOL.

So I was actually waiting for someone to ask this...

a) How often and how long depend on where your team members are located and what their work schedules or student schedules are like. For example, if team members are all located outside of the same city, practices are likely to be on weekends, and as a result, segmented into fewer, but slightly longer practices, rather than shorter practices during M-F. It's tough to commute on a weeknight. Additionally, whether your members work from 9 am-5 pm (or 9 am-5 am!), or have evening classes can also affect a weeknight practice schedule.

As Kinnell mentioned, technology can help out here -- SMD's done the video choreo thing in the past and while it's not optimal, it's certainly helpful in a pinch. And for the reasons above, we tend to have practices on Sat and Sun because that's what works with our girls' schedules.

b) Ask a roster to commit for six months of the year and delineate a practice schedule, but know that dropouts (injuries, unexpected family issues, etc.) will likely occur. We've never tried having an "understudy", mostly because most people that are working/in grad school want to commit to a team if they're going to have the chance to perform. The only suggestion I can make here is to situate your team in an an area (preferably a metropolis) where bhangra dancers are freely available, because you have a larger pool of folks to choose from in the event that you need someone to pinch-hit. While long-distance choreo may work for some, my belief is you truly have to have all 8,10,12 members of your team at practice in order to get any kind of consistency.

My two cents -- hope that helps!

1. Don't fall into the trap of learning by video and having 2 practices as a team...it rarely is successful.  Avoid it like a the plague.
2. Most independent teams have a lot of people who are working or going to school...the key is finding a day in your schedule or two where you can all meet up.  My team practices every Sunday from 10-5.  We extend this right before a practice and sometimes include weekday practices.
3. 1 day a week, at least for me, is not that big a deal.  We all have so much free time if we just manage our time right, so 6 hours a week to bhangra is not that big.
4. It helps to keep up with current trends and music, it keeps you passionate and excited.

Absolutely. As Priya said, we've tried this in the past and you will never even begin to reach your full potential as a team. It also completely ruins the fun of competition weekends, since you're up all night practicing and end up completely exhausted for the rest of the weekend. Not worth it and entirely too stressful.

I'd also suggest finding a team that is efficient during practices....hahahha...You do not want to get on a team where practices drag out and you waste time...

Probably most importantly is what FG said regarding time management...there is plenty time in a day for everything...hell, if you are a time management beast..you can do multiple things in a week...not just bhangra, but most of us are not so fortunate to be that skilled at time management...

Bottom line - Get in and Get out...if you wanna dance, make sure you aren't wasting any time elsewhere.

How about getting married, making roti and still doing competitive bhangra? Now that's a thought.

Only because it smacks of partner drama and I thrive on that kind of thing. Also because I wanted to write "+1".

HK locks us in the studio for days right before the competition and slips us water and some food through the mail slot in the door.

:p

but yes, we meet up about 2 times a week for about 2 hrs each, everyone comes to practices and if no one can make it in the evenings, we hold 5am practices.  Most of our team works and goes to school, we make it happen.
