Rangli Jawani & Logo Design Plagiarism
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:01:16 PM »
Dear Rangli Jawani,

Please do not jack other people's work. The logo you promote is jacked from my own work and I am not a fan of my graphic design work being taken/modified without my explicit permission. I will be further infuriated if a logo I made for another team was used by you guys to be printed on t-shirts/team apparel, circulated to fans and credited to another graphic designer. The logo has been publicized by a competition website as well as in intro videos at other major venues.

If you think this should have been done via PM, I clearly disagree. There needs to be incentive for teams not to jack the work of others and I think throwing the incident into the public eye may be the best way to do it. Danny has also had his work ripped on multiple occasions in the past. If we call out teams that rip choreography and mixes, then the team logo, one of the major components of a team's own identity, is fair game. Rangli Jawani, you have been called out for taking something that is not yours.

Kinnell,

We are really sorry we stole your logo.  We had it made from an outside source so we trusted what we were given.  Well have the logo changed asap and we give you full credit for it.  I honestly had no idea it was yours, we didnt pick it out ourselves so we went with what we were given.  No t-shirts were printed or designed with that logo so dont get too pissed.

From our team to you, we apologize.

This is why you PM first kinnell. Never hurts to talk to someone before public evisceration, I understand the frustration though. Track the other guy down and demand compensation

If you think this should have been done via PM, I clearly disagree.

Ok, still. You should've done this through PM. Yes, a 50% chance that the team purposely stole it ("let's just use it, no one's gonna notice"), but also a 50% chance that they didn't. No need to bash another fellow team and using words like "Rangli Jawani, you have been called out for taking something that is not yours".

I'm all for calling someone out when you have proof or 100% knowledge that they stole something that is yours but in this case, a PM for clarification before jumping to conclusions would've been the classier route of action.

Sick logo btw.

There really isn't any way to get proof, Waleed, (unless a deceitful, more tactical method is used). Any team can claim that they got it from someone else. I'm not saying that Rangli Jawani is lying. I'm simply pointing out that no one who is interested in preserving the integrity of their team name will flat out come out and say that "Yeah, we took it on purpose. We thought no one would notice".

Rangli Jawani. On the behalf of Spartan Bhangra (2008-2009), I accept your apology. But the damage is already done and there is no compensation for me or the team. (I would love for you to post the name of your outside source) I'm happy to hear that you guys are working on getting a new logo made as soon as possible and applaud your efforts in trying to fix what seems to be something out of your control. Yay for world peace and KFC! :)

Here's what this topic, in my opinion, will serve to do:
1) Anyone who was at Bayside Bhangra, saw their promos or intro videos or saw their logo on Big Apple Bhangra website and was like, "Damn, Rangli Jawani has a sick logo" and somehow happens to come to this thread, is now like "Oh, it was actually Spartan Bhangra's logo" and/or "It was a KINGS Productions logo".
2) Hopefully and more importantly, warn others to not take parts of other people's logos/art work. Even if it isn't executed in the most classiest way, it works to remind people that they can be called out.

Neither of these would have been accomplished via private message.

Dear Kinnell and users of BTF,

My name is Pragnesh Patel and I am the designer of Rangli Jawani's logo. Some of the things I want to clear out. The dancers of Rangli Jawani had nothing to do with the design of the logo and thus I would like to take back Rajbir's apology and present my own sincere apology. I also believe you were totally wrong to call out the team like this and accuse the dancers without any proof and I believe you owe them sincere apology.

As far as the design of the logo goes. I am not a professional logo designer and I do not do this for money. The text RJ in the logo is indeed my own creation and as far as the center dancer goes, if I recall it correctly I found it as a black and white image either on google.com or on one of the shirts at zazzel.com (http://www.zazzle.com/gifts?cg=103697210475713771). When using it for the logo, I sincerely had no idea about it being Kings Productions' work. I had also looked through majority of bhangra team logos on BTF before finalizing the logo on Nov. 9th. 2009 to ensure no one else has similar image. I do have all of my original files dated (based on computer's Date of creation and date of modification) and copy of my rough sketches to back me up.

If the dancer in the middle is indeed your work from the sketch, I once again apologize. I will try to find the source I used for image of the dancer over the weekend or you could just somehow prove it to be your original work from the scratch, because I am 100% sure that it was not taken from your website when I initially used it.

In addition. I have not used my name anywhere as the designer of the logo nor have made any money nor have done advertising of any kind based on it. As soon as its ensured that the dancer is your creation from scratch before the date of Nov. 9. 09 I am willing to change the team's logo and create another thread to fully credit you for an amazing work.

Final thought. I completely understand your attitude towards this matter, though I strongly feel that you should have first contacted one of the team members before accusing them or even accusing me of plagiarism. My intention was just to use a clip-art like most of the bhangra teams do and none to take credit for someone else's work. I will try to be fully careful in the future and so should you.

Sincerely,
Pragnesh Patel

Alot of logo's are on google if you google "Bhangra" or "bhangra man" etc.. i think that this should have been done by PM as well since it wouldn't have tarnished Rangli Jawani's rep.Maybe when making logo's and taking little icons from the internet we can start looking further into the images  to see where it came from! I think this could have been dealt in a more mature manner instead of a thread on a public forum and bolding that you "called them out".
Despises hearing " your PERformance was hot "

so kinnell,  did you MAKE this "bhangra man" ? or did you find him on the internet, edit him, and call him your own, and then try and ridicule us for using the same image?
