« on: December 09, 2009, 11:52:36 PM »
We would like to thank ALL the teams that took their time and effort to apply to our competition. We had a staggering 50+ plus teams apply to our competition, and we appreciate all your commitment!

Unfortunately, we could only select 12 teams. We are very proud to present each of our teams broken down by category in alphabetical order:

Bhangra:
CMU Chak De Bhangra
Hopkins Hareepa
Terrier Bhangra

Fusion:
Broad Street Baadshahz
Delaware Kamaal
NYU Pandemonium

Garba/Raas:
Bentley Bizraas
BU Fatakada
UMD EntouRaas

Hindi Film:
A.NU.Bhav
UCI Zamana
UCLA Nashaa

We will be placing 1st in each category (Bhangra, Garba/Raas, Hindi-Film, and Fusion), and one overall winner.

I hate to say this, but for the caliber of boston's organization and how cool this comp looks, I'm disappointed at the lineup.

I can see what you mean Ashveer seeing as how Boston Bhangra usually brings in really top-caliber Bhangra teams but this is a fusion comp, which is why I think I could why some teams might not apply. But I still think the lineup looks pretty solid. You've got Pandemonium, and the Garba lineup looks pretty good, from however much Garba experience I have.

disappointed? bro, for the fusion, raas, and hindi film fusion categories, these teams are mad legit for this competition. the teams in this category are like one of the top teams in their category. I'm pretty sure this'll be a good competition.

lets go BroadStreeet! repppin philly WOOT! good luck to the rest of the teams!

I don't pretend to know very much about the south asian dance scene, but I only recognize 3 of the names out of 12, but I'm no expert...that doesn't necessarily mean that the competition is bad or will be bad...again, Boston Bhangra (and now South Asian Nation) has a legitimate reputation, but I would simply have expected more 'big name' teams...perhaps it was an issue of less publicity or disinterest, or that as others have said that this is a bomb comp. Its just I wouldnt expect, for example, to see 2 boston teams in the same category at an elite competition, and 2 bhangra teams that have rarely competed.

agreed...the raas and hindi film are stacked and fusion i'm guessing NYU pandas are going to take pretty easily.  Bhangra is soooo disappointing.  terrier bhangra (if its representing boston college) and hopkins hareepa never ever compete and when they do (terrier bhangra at BBC), its completely average or even below average.  i wish boston bhangra would have had a more stacked bhangra section lineup especially after their reputation with BBC.  Oh well, i guess its the first time they've held this competition and many teams didn't apply (for the bhangra section especially).

is their any other big competition on this day??

good luck to all the teams.

First of all, props to SAA for separating HFD and Fusion. It needs to be done at more competitions. Especially at these raas/bhangra/fusion competitions.

Second of all, the bhangra line-up is a bit disappointing. It seems that the SAA committee could not make up their minds on what they wanted from the bhangra section. If you want to give the bhangra section a fair chance at getting the overall prize, then pick more modern teams. CMU is the most well-established team in the bhangra line-up but they may get shafted by a more modern rubric. (CMU, remember those judges at OSU who made comments about why our "wooden clappy things" were all brown and why our "hats" were not as shiny as everyone else?)

Third, the raas line-up is okay. From what I have been told, UMD is not the powerhouse it was last year without Mayur, Anuj and the rest of the gang. Nonetheless, I look forward to meeting and seeing the new team in action at Maryland Masti. (Nikhil, I will holler at your brother). Regarding Bentley, there are still judges at Garbafest who are still baffled how Bentley even placed last year. BU Fatakadas were great during their BOB run (like 2 years ago), but they have yet to bring anything crazy to the table. Nonetheless, raas teams change year to year and I look forward to seeing BU/UMD fight it out.

My predictions:

Bhangra:
- CMU

Raas:
- BU Fatakadas

Fusion:
- BROADSTREET

HFD:
- Northwestern

Overall: Northwestern

Oh god, and why we didn't "use one song the whole way through" ugh. OSU is fusion-only now ;)...wonder why

Overall: Northwestern

These guys were nuts last year, absolutely freaking entertaining to watch. Really simple and repetitive choreo though, so that could hurt them, but they all sold their story line with the acting and set so didn't matter

The OSU Buckeye Mela main organizer kept telling me that he was boys with the people who ran Bhangra Blowout. And I kept telling him that unless he found judges that could tell the difference between a "hat" and a "pagh", he should never have a bhangra category. I guess he never found those judges. :)

Overall: Northwestern

Yeah, no one at OSU stood a chance against them. I thought I was watching a Bollywood movie - I kept forgetting I was watching a dance performance. I agree about the simple choreography, but I felt the fact that they did multiple stunts definitely helped them a lot as well. But who knows what they will bring to the HFD circuit this year. I know that their lead dancer last year has been around for a while - I met him initially at Raas Chaos my frosh year (3 years ago, he danced for Northwestern Raas) and he was a grad student at NW back then. Perhaps he graduated? He definitely was a huge asset to the team last year.

To All:
We believe this is a solid lineup based on team history, videos and what these teams will bring. We believe the Bhangra teams will surprise all of you as well. They might not have the same hype as alot of the teams, but they will do well. Considering this is our first year hosting this competition, we think our lineup is solid. If you want to see a show that represents all aspects of indian dance, this is the one to come to. You won't be disappointed by the talent level!

On a side note, South Asian Nation is the parent company of Boston Bhangra. We have people from Boston Bhangra working with us, along with other competition organizers to make this one of the biggest competitions of the year. We got over 50 teams registering this year, and hopefully after a successful start, we'll get even more applying next year.

We hope to see you in Boston in February!

Sincerely,
South Asian Nation

Who is hopkins hareepa and what comps have they participated in (any vids)? And terrier bhangra didn't perform well at boston bhangra competition...I'm just seeing if this competition was more for 2nd tier teams and feel that more peeps would come to SAS if their were more popular bhangra groups (like vcu or drp or empire or sher or any of the 1st tier teams from the BBC roster)!!! This year i think BBC had the most stacked comp roster in their history but i just think that SAS bhangra section is a let down

now why would a competition not go for the top teams in the bhangra category? you think that if teams like vcu drp or empire applied to SAS that the competition organizers would not pick them? first off, BTF would go crazy knowing such teams got rejected. Secondly, the organizers probably picked these three bhangra teams cuz they were probably the best applicants out of all the bhangra teams that applied.

1. Lots of comps in february, money limits teams into making strategic decision
2. Keep in mind that a lot of teams don't like to go to combined comps like this

We (CMU) on the other hand are looking forward to a kickass time with a lot of different teams.

Everyone move on, please. There's so much bhangra happening in Jan/Feb just get excited instead of trying to find something wrong with every comp
