Lastly we are going to releasing our judges information on a rolling basis. Thus we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to two of our judges.
Fusion : Jeevan Thomas
Jeevan Thomas, started learning Bharatanatyam when he was just three years of age from his mother and Guru, Smt. Manju Thomas. As Jeevan grew older, so did his love for dance. His desire to learn other styles and dance forms transformed from passion into obsession. He now excels in hip hop, breakdancing, Bollywood and Bhangra. He has won many accolades one of which being the prestigious "Nadanasree" award from FOKANA at the annual Convention held in New Jersey in July 2004. As one of the main choreographers and team members of the number one all male fusion dance team in the nation, The Wanted Ashiqz, Jeevan’s love for dance and the arts grows with each passing performance. His team has won many competitions such as BOB 5 in 2009, Bollywood America in 2010, Kollaboration NY in 2011 and placed 2nd at World Of Dance in NY last May. In the midst of all the successes, Jeevan, and his team, has stayed humble and true to the arts and will continue to perform with passion for as long as he can.
Bhangra : Waleed Mehmood.
Waleed has been involved in the competitive Bhangra circuit in many ways. As the Founder and Captain of Geneseo Bhangra at the State University of New York at Geneseo, he formed the team in 2004 and took them to several competitions. 3 year later, he graduated and moved to Washington, DC and was selected as a dancer for Mitar Albeleyan Da Bhangra Group (MAD). He was fortunate enough to have had some great teachers who retaught him the basics of Bhangra from a very traditional standpoint. At this point he was selected as one of the first moderators for Bhangra Teams Forum, an online portal for Bhangra dancers to connect & network. He was also invited to join the Apna Virsa Apna Punjaba (AVAP) Executive Board and took an active role in organizing AVAP 2009 and networking with Bhangra teams all over North America. Currently he is one of the Team Leaders for Lalkaare Sheran De (LSD), one of the only folk live Bhangra teams on the east coast. He is also a dancer on LSD and strives to learn more about the folk style of Bhangra and pass on the knowledge to his team members. As a Team Leader, he is dedicated to preserving this cultural art form in its truest and most authentic form. His latest venture, along with his team at Emdo Entertainment, is Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational - a revolutionary concept that brought North America's top 8 teams to compete on the same stage with an invitational format. The competition is going strong and now in its 3rd year. Waleed also serves as the manager for Ricky Jatt, a local Punjabi singer who launched his singing career last year. From Geneseo to MAD to LSD, he has been on every type of team (modern, traditional, live, music, co-ed, all male) and can appreciate Bhangra in all its variations and styles. He continues to be very involved in the Bhangra scene and is always looking for ways to help preserve this art and help bring it to the forefront. He has also judged Bhangra Blowout (2010 & 2011), Bhangra in the Burgh 2011 and Aaj Ka Dhamaka 2011.Hope to hear from the other teams soon.Srujan Planning Committee.
