Hey

Just wanted to say thx to Rupinder, Aman & Aman, and the PANJ representative at the mixer, and the rest of the Texas Showdown commitee, you guys were awesome.

It was nice to meet everyone and we wish we could have stayed longer  :-[ next time for sure  :)

Kinnell: after reading your essay  :P (which was great) you definitely are Mr. BTF  ;)

Thanks to everyone who is posting a review, we really appreciate it.

I managed to get a couple team performances recorded. PM me and I'll let you know if I have your teams performance.

Also, if anyone has a copy of the PANJ girls performance could you please email it to me at gangsta_sim11@hotmail.com (yeah, yeah its old, stop laughing  :P )

Thanks  ;D

Competition Review:

Big improvement on auditorium from last year. Stage was nice. In terms of sound, it was decent. Bass was totally lacking with the auditorium's speakers and it seemed like Amar (who was in charge of the soundboard) had the treble up too high.. any loud vocals would totally rip my ear drums. I was maybe 5-6 rows from the stage and directly in the center, so in about the most ideal spectator’s seat.

The competition needs more organization. My friends and I arrived around 6:40 p.m. and things were still being organized/setup. It seemed like the person handling tickets had just setup the table moments before we arrived.. the guy didn't know of all the ticket prices (i.e. he didn't know it was $7 for students with valid ID). At the time, they didn't have anything to mark our hands at the time (to make it easier for people to leave/come back to the auditorium), so we were just told to present our tickets if we needed to come back in. The flyer said door open at 6 p.m. and show would start at 7:00 p.m. SHARP (they stressed the "SHARP" part).. but the show didn't officially start until about 7:45ish.

Highlights before the competition: The auditorium stage crew (two white guys) dancing to bhangra at the same time they put up the event sponsor banners. While I was using the restroom, a few guys from one of the teams who were completely ready walk into the men's restroom (barefoot.. gross!) and start peeing in the urinals next to me while trying to hold up their chadre.

The auditorium was roughly 3/4th’s full (better turnout than last year from what I hear), but there lacked a lot of energy from the crowd. At least some of the teams sitting in the back helped cheer on others. It was mostly families that came to enjoy the event, so it’s a lot different than having a crowd full of high school/college students.

The MC's were terrible. One of the MC’s was Ashok uncle, who kept going on and on reciting things from poetry, to telling stories that would just drag on, and even tried including some humor (which would fail miserably). He would literally talk continuously for like 10 minutes. Even before the teams were anxiously waiting to hear the rest!! Sandhu uncle had to literally stop him and take the mic away. The other MC was DJ Shivvy, who didn’t understand much Punjabi and kept saying that he wish there were subtitles for everything being said in Punjabi on stage. He tried to be funny, but his jokes were pretty lame. Also, I agree with Kinnell that he didn’t keep the audience in mind always (cracking a joke about getting girl’s numbers from one of the bhangra teams).

It was nice that DJ Shivvy gave an opportunity for each member of the teams to introduce himself/herself. That provided for some individual recognition. I wish he was more interactive with the crowd though.. i.e. play games with the audience, call up members of the audience to do things while the next team was getting ready (i.e. a small dance with the winner getting some small prize), etc.

Rupinder seemed to have done most of the organizational work behind the scenes for this competition and she definitely could have used more help. I am sure if there were more people helping (which is definitely need if this competition wants to continue to improve), it would have been a better experience for both performers and audience members.

I knew about Waris Punjab De not being able to make it to this competition because of VISA issues, but what happened to Heeray Punjab De?? Anybody know? I was really bummed because I really wanted to see them perform. Why is that nobody at the competition even addressed why certain teams that didn’t come? I feel everyone has the right to know why the teams didn’t show up, especially considering their names are on the flyer.

Team Reviews:

Kinnell provided some good analysis/reviews. I can simply provide some general feedback, because I would have to watch every team's performance over again to give specific suggestions on improvement.

Nakhre Jehre Maardey - Not bad for a performance without much practice, but that shouldn't be an excuse coming into a competition. Performance was sloppy, team members were not fully in sync, energy was good (but varied between people too much.. try getting everyone at the same level). Overall it looked you guys had fun performing and you can only get better with more practicing/performances. It's tough going first, but you guys held it down.

Gajjde Gabroo – Their singer, dholi, and sarangi player were really good. The dancers varied too much and didn’t function as one team (had distinct styles of executing the same move). Also, not all the guys would put in energy on all the moves. Some moves were not completed fully, especially during the faster portions of the performance. I would need to see a video of your routine to give you more specific suggestions.

PANJ Girls – Exact same routine as the Toronto Bhangra Youth Festival (TBYF), but just executed cleaner. Also the mela scene (which was awesome) was at the beginning, rather than the end. The varidiyan are sickkk and look great on stage. You guys had one of the best mixes of the night in my opinion and I really like a lot of the formations (they provided for great use of the stage). The variation in bhangra moves was great. I would just make sure people are executing moves the same way. Lastly, your energy was top notch and it would help for the future to make sure everyone it hitting their moves at the same time. Great job to Nicky for pulling through a great performance despite the chunni incident.

Texas Bhangra – The new vardiyan for this year are an improvement over last year. You guys seriously need to pin your chadre better though because I saw an awful lot of legs/shorts. Not surprisingly, this team had the most crowd support. Typical Texas Bhangra style with this routine, except finally incorporating more traditional elements. I would still want to see more variance in speed in the mix/routine with much more creative/complex formations. Also, work on getting in sync more.. especially with your quick changes in moves (doesn’t seem you guys repeat any moves). The end of your routine didn’t end with a “bang” because the guy with the TX flag fell, which you can’t afford to have happen at a competition. Overall, I feel Texas Bhangra concentrates more on quick movements, non-repetitive, in-your-face bhangra.. and I personally would like to see more grace. You guys have talented dancers, but you need to slowly walk through all your moves and make sure everyone is doing them the exact same way at the exact same time with more of a concentration on grace than speed. The short girl (I believe her name was Gini) tore it up with her energy/nakhre.

GMU Bhangra – I was in shock to see what this team brought (didn’t expect it at all). The routine was very explosive and much cleaner than Desi Dhamaka (while they had 12 dancers at Showdown vs only 8 dancers at Dhamaka). The vardiyan had contrasting colors and looked great on stage. Their dancers seemed so comfortable on stage and all of their facial expressions showed their confidence. Their moves were folk, but done to modern music (similar to VCU, SGPD, etc). The mix had a really good combination of slow & fast music, which matched the choreography perfectly. I agree with Kinnell that you guys should remove the leprechaun kick, because the first thing I said when I saw it was “they jacked that from SGPD.” It might have been cool to see for the average audience member, but since you guys are a nationally competing team, it would be safer to develop your own “trademark” moves. If you guys can implement a clean routine like this into more complex/varying formations, I totally agree with Kinnell that GMU could rise to the status of a tier one collegiate bhangra team this year. Look forward to seeing you guys improve and compete more!

UCLA Bruin Bhangra – BEST intro video of the night. I am sorry I don’t have more feedback for you guys. I don’t remember your performance specifically, so I would need to watch it/see it again.

LSD – Definitely had the most experienced dancers and it showed in their performance. Their singer was amazing (forgot his name) and Nana was great on dhol. Your vardiyan were some of the best I’ve seen; I loved how they shined on stage. The routine was done very well, with only minor mistakes that I noticed. Very traditional performance and I loved seeing so many different moves used in your routine. I feel you guys could have gotten a bit more creative with steps, while still keeping it folk. Energy wise, I thought you guys seemed a bit low in the beginning (maybe due to being nervous), but then picked it up toward the middle/end. The nakhre were really great (especially by the red jori & light blue jori).. but some of you guys would not be smiling and seemed to be concentrating on the moves more. Overall, I would have loved to see a greater variety of formations and high energy throughout the routine.

Placings:

My predictions coming into the competition (for teams that actually did compete):

Live – 1) LSD 2) Gajjde Gabroo
Modern – 1) PANJ Girls 2) Texas Bhangra

After seeing all the performances, my predictions on who to place were:

Live – 1) LSD 2) Gajjde Gabroo
Modern – 1) GMU Bhangra 2) PANJ Girls

Actual placings were:

Live – 1) Gajjde Gabroo 2) LSD
Modern – 1) GMU Bhangra 2) PANJ Girls

After-Party:

One word: WHACK! Which after-party gets over at 2 a.m. when the competition ended close to 11? The after-party location was a good 25 minutes away (in Downtown Dallas) too. My friends and I got some food and then hit up the party a little after 12. The place was so dead/empty! There were a few teams there and most people got there around the same time we arrived. So we had a little less than 2 hours to party.. on top of that, wtf was up with the music?? PLAY BHANGRA!!! It's a freakin bhangra competition after-party not some rap, hip-hop, dance/trance after-party! The times when anything besides Bhangra was being played, the crowd totally died down. With less than 2 hours until everyone had to leave the club, I expected Bhangra to be played non-stop.

I felt bad for the people/teams who didn't get to the after-party until around 1 a.m. or later since they really have very little time to have fun. When people come from outside of Dallas, they want to at least be able to enjoy themselves for one night. Also, transportation wasn't provided for the teams to the after-party? Wow! No wonder I didn't see a lot of the teams there. Next year, I hope there are better arrangements for the after-party and it last more than 2-3 hours.  ::)

Shoutouts:

Got a chance to finally meet with the following peeps: Shahrukh (LSD), Waleed (LSD), Shahzaib (LSD), Pamela (GMU Bhangra), Anay (Texas Bhangra). Big thanks to the HK Giddha girls (especially Rupinder) for all the hardwork that went into putting on this competition!

P.S. - The "I love you Kinnell" was not a girl, but actually me yelling from the audience ;) Too bad we didn't get to meet up man.

had a great time in texas....rupinder did a great job running the show, despite the fact that she wasnt feeling 100% either....it was great to see her and the siblings run the show together....bit of advice i have in regards to the lineup selection: the process made things way too complicated, i think picking numbers out of a hat would have been more fair to all the teams, or at least having all the teams there for the selection is important...but other than that, everything was great, we all had a blast...ill try to give reviews as best i can:

njm: couldnt see you guys since we were rite after you, but it was nice meeting all of you guys...should out to kinnel, ram, vic, sid, n whoever else i may have missed....mix sounded good from the snippets that i heard, but cant say much bout the dance

panj girls: AWESOME performance...ladies had great nakhre, n they all knew how to dance really well....i thought it was a great performance, maybe some critiques are that coordination was off at a few points, and the energy did go down at certain parts, but overall, it was a great set and it was executed well

texas bhangra: i thought they had a mix of traditional and "modern" steps, but either way, they def brought energy...i think the team is transitioning towards the folk side, but the same colored vardiyaa is somewhat out of favor today...i would say to use jodi colored vardiyaa and slow down the jhummar a bit...but otherwise, this team is headed in the rite direction and will def bring it with the hott mixes...shoutout to dholi harry, one of the coolest guys i met all weekend

gmu: WOW!! these guys KILLED it...this performance clearly puts GMU with the top college teams, they had energy, were coordinated, and they even brought some creativity to the stage that i hadnt seen before....as far as critiques, i think just a few parts had a less energy, and one or two formations were a bit off...but overall, they clearly ripped it and deserved the first place....shout out to j-deep, pam, n the rest of the crew whose names i cant remember haha

lsd: really was great to watch these guys in person...they had great energy n nakhre, n vardiyaa were beautifulll....ricky had a great folk voice for bhangra, n nana was clean as always....shahrukhs bro is crazy sick for his age haha....shout out to waleed n jap!

overall great weekeend....long ass car ride (45 hours total in driving time), but def worth it....im proud of all my gajjde gabroo guys for pulling it together n getting it done....half the team hadnt done live before, so the experience was def new for them...thanks 2 ameer n apurva, n sumeet for the dedicated driving to practice...arjun was a great co-captain too haha :)...band did perfect out there, which was amazing considering they only practiced all together one time before the comp...hope to see everyone again next year! n ill visit you gmu guys when im in dc again :)

Had an awsome, yet very short (less than 13 hrs) time in Texas!!! Congrats to Rupinder and the rest of the family for running a great show! We arrived in Texas, the same day as the comp. Were picked up around 2:30 pm from the airport, went straight to the venue for rehearsal. Loved how we had 30mins to rehearse, thanks to both Amans for the rides, balloons, and help with rehearsal. After rehearsal, straight to the hotel to drop luggage off and back to the venue to get dressed. Comp was running late but its cause they wanted the venue to be atleast half full before the comp started. Mc's, especially Shivvy were kinda weird and a lil creepy. After our performance, we got to sit and watch the show. Everyone was surprised, including Rupinder, that the judges decided on 2 catagories but I guess it worked out. I wished the trophies were bigger :P

Didnt get to see many of the teams but I shall give a lil review

GMU: absolutely impressive!!!!!!!!! Loved the formations, nakhre, everything. Music selection was great, choreo was good, and the nakhre was great. Girl in PINK chunni absolutely ripped it!! First jori material right there. Girl with yellow chunni was kinda lacking energy the 2nd half of the routine but still did good. Wished the choreo was a lil more GMU and didnt remind me of anyone else, but i guess it happens sometimes. Overall congrats on the 1st!! U guys deserved it!!

UCLA: good jobs, u guys were synched well. Not a fan of modern bhangra but it was entertaining. Dug the intro vid. More energy was needed from the girls but still it was great sharing the stage with you guys.

LSD: loved the vardiyan. Straight panj girls/lsd collabo with the vardiyan :P Enjoyed the singer and nana killed it. Good jodi matches, enjoyed the choreo. Loved the jugni, my fav part. Great people too!

Not really gonna say too much about the placings, didnt see gajjde gabroo. But placings seemed legit. Congrats to Amy Dhillon and Lovepreet on best dancer!

Special shoutouts to:::::

Texas for letting us borrow a shikka!!! Thanks guys!!
LSD for letting us borrow a kunda and letting us put a ramaal on it!!!!
Shah Rukh for paying for the taxi ride!!!!!!! Such a gentleman, u are :P ;)
Amir, the video guy, for representing the girls at the mixer and picking 3rd. Ur our good luck charm :D
Aman for being an awsome liaison and listening to 11 girls and for hooking the balloons up!
And finally Ricky and Pardeep, for showing up all the way from Toronto for support and making it an awsome trip, especially after the comp!!

Hello!!

First off, I would like to say thank you to everyone who made it down to TXSBC! You guys made this show a success!! I wanted to also thank everyone for their constructive criticism, it is very much appreciated. This will really help me better the show next year. I am planning on going to more shows within the year to get guidance and help on organizing my show in the upcoming years.

Congrats to all the teams who performed and placed. This was an amazing show! Every performance was beautiful! I want to say thank you to everyone who made it out and everyone who helped.
