What is today's "Perfect" bhangra?
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:54:52 PM »
This is a question I often ask myself. The way bhangra has evovled with time is beyond amazing, but it can be argued that bhangra has taken a turn for the better, or taken a turn for the worst. Just wanted to know the opinion of the greater bhangra community. What is your idea of perfect bhangra?

There is no such thing as perfect bhangra.

Damn, tough question.

Regardless of what perfect bhangra is, I like the fact that some teams in the circuit still stick to what ever style they enjoy. It's starting to get more and more common to see one team do superbly well, creating a new definition of "perfect bhangra," and everyone else trying to emulate that. I love when teams stick to their own styles, even if it is not considered "perfect" to today's standard. More and more competitions are starting to feature 8 or so bhangra teams that look exactly the same, and that is not exactly healthy for the circuit.

I would definitely say a turn from the better. Looking at the various teams, the diverse styles that have emerged speak to this. Some teams take a modern approach (Bhangra Empire comes to mind) and have been highly successful in popularizing bhangra in North America. Other teams have managed to retain more traditional roots (PCBCA is one example of many, and live teams as well). And all teams are constantly trying to bring new and innovative material to the stage (NJ kills is with this). One overarching theme between both types of teams seems to be the music and hip-hop in mixes. Overall I think this spectrum of different styles only bodes well for the future of the circuit. As far as evolution goes, both seem to fall in and out of style. Both approaches have been successful in their own way, and, as someone who is new to the circuit, I love seeing both. I don't think there is anything like "perfect bhangra." All bhangra has its strengths and is entertaining in different ways. Perfection is keeping our culture alive and loving it at the same time.

Edit: just read the posts that went up while i was writing this

The competitive circuit has definitely shaped what today's "perfect" bhangra is.  Usually whenever a team comes up with something new and innovative, they get rewarded for it.  For example, teams like Khalsa Junction and LBC in the mid 2000s brought stunts and power/swag to the scene (Shastri ppt).  As a result, they were winning comps left and right.  Then, VCU comes out of nowhere and wins comps with traditionality, uniformity, and cleanliness.  Bhangra Empire also became successful after incorporating entertainment and gimmicks into their sets.  Simultaneously, SGPD and NJ came on with high energy performances.  This divide in teams winning comps with different styles has made the definition of "perfect" bhangra hazy.  At the same time, as long as dancers show that they are intoxicated with joy, they are dancing "perfect" bhangra.

I completely agree. From an audience's standpoint, the different forms of bhangra that have emerged today have the potential to make competitions exciting and filled with variety. This can only be achieved if teams stick to their unique styles.

One issue that emerges, however, is how does one compare these different styles from a judging standpoint? For example, how does a judge compare a well-executed but relatively safe, traditional set to a set filled with gimmicks, stunts and modern style?

I recognize that I am very new to the circuit. At the same time, I have observed this issue of judging from various competitions. I feel that comparing styles in a non-subjective manner is a very crucial issue for the bhangra circuit at this time. It'll be interesting to see how the judging plays out in the upcoming competitions!
