I think Jay Sean right off the bat due to his ethnicity. But other than him who are other performers who would be great to bring in as a special performance(Music, Comedy, Actors, etc)

Now my whole idea is opening up the competition to a non desi audience. We all know that Desi's will come to the comp. But Bhangra is such a dance that will get anyone interested. Just look at some of the teams out there. Not all teams have all Desi Dancers. So who would be a performer that would bring out more people and introduce them to these competitions??

Kanye, Russell Peters, Lady Gaga, Sean Paul???

Burgh is a completely student-run comp so we live and die by the general interest in pittsburgh, not just by desis, but by everyone in the community. So burgh usually tries to get student groups to perform in order to develop a relationship.

Big names are great, but also try to find really solid local groups (whatever they may be, dance music etc) and give them a venue to perform. The community will respond in the end positively and continue to support

Don't bother with a special performer..use that money to pay for teams' hotels or travel.

These days, many guest performers are actually disappointing when it comes to their actual performance on stage.

For example, Manak-E: Seen this lad a few times, each time he gets worse. Constantly forgetting lyrics, of beat with music, etc etc.

The way I view it, the audience has just spent nearly 2 hours watching performers dance their hearts out. At the end of the show, we all usually get bored by a very long and usually unnecessary performance.

However, with that said; I like the solution Bhangra Bash has done the past 2 years. They have gotten all teams on stage while judges are deliberating and let them sing boliyan. For hardcore traditional fans like me, there can be nothing better. This also stays in tune with the "theme" of the competition, if you will. I would love to see something like this at Pioneer Bhangra rather than an actual guest performer who will most likely lip sing. This is just my opinion, I understand others may not enjoy this as much as I do.  8)

We do this as well...we get one or two groups from campus to perform and draw a diverse crowd...plus those performers and their supporters always come out to the after party and that always adds to the fun  ;D ...Anil, I really think you should consider having a U Albany group perform to draw a more collegiate crowd

 :-\

Do you have $50,000 USD to spend on a single "western" artist/celebrity? - you can get away with a desi artist in less than 5-6k lol, but you can't scam the "white" system haha

Last I checked, Jay Sean was going for $20,000 USD (including flights, performance fee, hotel reservations, limos, dancers, what not).. and this was the price in September... plus now that he is with Cash Money and with the release of his album :-\, I'm sure that price got jacked up as well. This could work if your venue is massive and you promote this event as if it was his concert solely, and get TONS of girls to show up and pack the place up... then maybe you'd be walking away with some $$$ in the early hours of the following morning otherwise not a smart move (in my opinion)

Go with what Swi and psoni1 suggested.... grab a hold of local talent and give them a chance to showcase their creativity... you'll be benefiting anyways cause the performers will promote the event for you and get people hyped up about reaching out and supporting them - in essence supporting your competition!

Hey Anil,

so you may know of my company outside of bhangra Enigma Ent. in NYC,

we work alot w. companies like SAX, FIVE 5TAR, TOPSHELF, DEFINE, etc...

We've had artists such as Jay Sean, Raghav, Imran Khan, Juggy D, The Bilz & Kashif,

and artists like Fabolous, MIMS, Nina Sky, Lumidee, Notch, Red Cafe, & Calabria

I can definitely say the desi artists are cheaper, I can give you ALOT more details and information via phone if needed, just by contract i cant release info on a public forum like this one

I can tell you this much, if you have the right contacts, Jay Sean is not 20,000 USD.

Agreed. Get a local team such as a hip or fusion team to use while judging is tabulated, keeps an impatient crowd entertained and saves u a lot of loot.

i think it completely depends if you have enough sponsors, enough money, then like competitions like blowout you could have an artist

however if its really cutting close a local act would be more efficient

I can tell you this much

artists like Lomaticc, Sunny Brown, Baba Khan, Imran Khan, The Bilz & Kashif, all are I'd say under 7,000 given the right contacts,

and artist like Jay Sean NOW, given the right contacts can be less than 15,000

all of these are assuming you have the right contacts, there are specific people who have been booking these artists before they blew up, and with this loyalty comes a hefty discount ;)
