Can someone explain to me what is going on with that?  I understand the preacher killed was the leader of a dalit sect of sikhism? is that correct?  Why are people rioting, who is rioting, how is this sect different than mainstream sikhism?

First of all it wasn't Australia but Vienna, Austria (in Europe).

This is not a cult where they follow a living guru, like Dera Sacha Sauda. This was one of the groups that follow Sikhi but placed Ravidasji on a status of a Guru almost. Some "mainstream Sikhs" went into their house of worship in Vienna with guns and knives and really ripped shit up.

The attack was stupid and completely un-Sikh. Now these rioters are acting like idiots but its India...religion always drives people crazy there.

Aman, you will be fine till Delhi. I heard Jalandhar had some problems but you are going to Ludhiana right...either way, lay low in Dellhi for a while...go see the Red Fort and get some nice chaat in Chandni Chowk  ;)

Mn its retarded here, we havent left the house since Sunday. Im in Nawansher, and its completly shutdown and same with Phagwara, and Hoshiarpur.  Jalandhar is where the majority of the damage is happening b/c thats where the baba lived. Buses, cars and trains have been set on fire, guys are running around with kirpans, I went for a walk yesterday evening and saw about 100 guys on motorcycles with weapons yelling stuff. In Nawansher they broke the Toyota showroom totally trashed it.

My dad was flying out of Amritsar today but hes in Chandigarh so hes stuck, trains stopped in Phagwara, its pretty bad. The baba was of a lower caste (chamaar caste) so they are going around attacking jatts. Its retarded b/c the caste system is suppose to be done and over with anyways.

There are no sects in Sikhism.  You are Sikh or you're not.  Plenty of people have come along pretending to be the Guru's but no one could replace them.  The fact that there was a man in a Gurudwara basically acting as a Guru in front of the Guru Granth Sahib is major disrespect and since our Guru is a living Guru and not some book, it is our job and duty to uphold the sanctity of our religion in any means possible.  However, if he was killed- that doesn't seem like the best solution, but in the end he shouldn't be acting like a Guru in the first place and can't say that he didn't deserve what was coming to him.  All these "Sects" preach modified Sikhi--whats the point, when there is nothing to modify.  The Indian Government gave Ravidass the seat of "Guru" years ago and ever since they have been resurfacing as Hindu converts and are aligning themselves with Hindus.  It is unfortunate to see extreme Hindu parties (RSS, BJP) cause such rukus and attempt to destroy Sikhi, but many of us are destroying it ourselves with the drinking smoking kesh katal I wonder what our Guru's would be thinking of us at this point.

just my 2 cents

can you provide some evidence about governmental sponsorship of Bhagat Ravidassji? Last time i cheked Ravidass's poetry was in the Guru Grant Sahib and he was born a century before the creation of Sikhism. His influence lasted a century and thats why he was honored as a Bhagath by the Gurus. Where does the Indian Government step in...also, just so you know, BJP is the national ally of the ruling party of Punjab (SAD), so I doubt they would support the current ruckus as that would cause instability in their ally's government...

I don't know much about the actual beef that happened. What I do know is that men of religion, men of God, such spiritual people should know much better. Murder or riots is not the response to squabbles over religion. The truth is God made us one, but its humans that try to divide ourselves so much (sikh,non-sikh, high caste, low caste, punjabi, non-punjabi, rich, poor, good, bad, etc.)

God may have created us as one but many paths have also been given to reach God.  Sikh is no division neither is Hindu these are paths- good, bad, high caste low caste are divisions I must agree.  Ravidass was and will remain a Bhagat, to Sikhs he is a Bhagat and the Indian Government gave him the status of Guru (I will get you detailed facts soon enough).  BJP/RSS has been calling Sikhs as Hindus for years and SAD is just as bad, alliances don't mean anything for these morons.

I dont really understand what you mean by the government giving Ravidas the status of guru? Werent his followers always calling him their satguru since his lifetime?

Those born into dalit families in the Punjab region have traditionally adhered to the Sikh way (and have ridded themselves of the caste ways) especially the Khalsa brotherhood.  By joining the Khalsa their following of Ravidass (as some Guru) had vanished, however with the resurgence of non khalsa ways- non Sikh thoughts have re emerged (castes, ravidass, fake sants..I mean its an epidemic in Punjab.  The government named him Guru of the dalits and gave him stature of the Sikh gurus in their religious context.  Basically they consider him their 11th Guru.  Chammars may have always held Ravidass in respect but only as a Bhagat, all until a few years back when they decided to make it a religion.  It makes no sense to me that they claim to be a separate religion but do Akhand Paaths, read the Guru Granth Sahib and have Nishan Sahibs at their "temples".  Its either choose the Sikh way or don't, Sikhi is very simple in in the simpleset form of all you must believe that there are 10 Guru's, the Guru Granth Sahib and there is ONE GOD.  Bottom Line no exceptions.

Although it is wrong to kill that baba, it is also unfair to treat the Guru Granth Sahib in such a way that disrespects Sikhi.  We constantly are bombarded with fake sants and sects that try to ruin the Paanth...but in the end.

You bring on some good points, as far as I know the Ravidasia movement is a relatively recent phenomena.  Wasn't there always a sizable amount of people who identified themselves as Sikhs who did not follow the Khalsa Panth? Do you think that these people might have felt alienated and not really respected by most Sikhs so they felt they had to break off and start their own sect? We are now seeing what the problem is, it is easy to condemn it but what can we do to fix it?

It is getting better as in some buses are running and so are the trains, but everything is still closed.

Yes the bani of Bhai Ravidass Ji is in the Guru Granth Sahib. Problem with this man was that he put a picture of himself in the gurudawara next to the golak (box you put money in).  And their had been arguments going back and forth about it, eventually they got pissed and killed him. Once again there is no justification for killing a person, but I agree with Jaskaran, he should have seen it coming.
