Learn a Punjabi Word a Day (or so)
« on: September 09, 2011, 03:24:40 PM »
A couple of friends of mine started a website that teaches you a Punjabi word a day. Each of them come from either side of Punjab so there is pretty sweet representation of words from different etymological backgrounds as well. It includes transliterations, etymology, and translations in English, as well as Punjabi in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi scripts. Its worth a visit:

Wow! This is amazing. Love that they not only provide the origins & translations, but use the word clearly in an actual sentence. Also lovin' that the words in Arabic/Urdu so I can pronounce them correctly :P

For anyone interested in going back to the beginning and reading them all, here is the link to the first entry in the blog: http://punjabirefill.com/page/9

Thanks for sharing bro,

Funny?
A guy (not me) and a girl run it together. One of them is in law school, one of them is muslim, one is from Kashmir/Amritsar, one is Lahori, one of them works in human rights, so you'll get words that are along those lines. I'll advocate for some words that pop into boliyan more often.

it's not necessarily humorous as much as it was odd that someone that i've seen on here is behind, or closely knows people behind that site. idk, it's not something i would have expected. in any case, i really love that site. it's one of the few places i can go to get short, sweet info on punjabi, which i've found is hard to learn online compared to something like japanese or even hindi.

You'd be surprised at the various ways in which people on BTF dedicate themselves to efforts like this one. More resources:

Nice bro, keep it up.

Only feedback I can point is, GURMUKHI is written wrong in sentences where it tries to explain how to use. Of course not all the words, but I could see enough to say that's not right.

Good luck and hopefully people will learn from this. I will def going to recommed this site to someone who want to learn Punjabi.

Multani can you do me a huge favor and pick one sentence that's wrong and send corrections to punjabirefill[at]gmail.com? It would be beneficial to everyone involved. I also encourage anyone else with comments/suggestion/corrections to get in touch at that email.

so just a suggestion some of the example sentences seem that they would be pretty hard to understand for someone who's trying to really build up on their punjabi speaking skills.

hindi and urdu are colloquially indistinguishable. if you speak hindi and then urdu, no one can tell which is which. so hindi-learning sources work just as well.

the only unique aspect of urdu is the script. is that what you mean?

My Hindi/Urdu professor has an online site for Urdu that explains how to use both the script and the grammar pretty well. The font can be a bit confusing to read sometimes, but I think there's an explanation somewhere on the site for how to fix that.

I pretty much learned how to read Urdu by solely referencing this site. Granted, I read very slowly, but it's a start!

http://taj.chass.ncsu.edu/urdu/index.html

Edit:

And in case anyone else is interested, here's the link to the one that uses Devanagari Script:

http://taj.chass.ncsu.edu/

It covers the script as well as basic grammar and vocabulary - and it's really easy to teach yourself as well!

By the way, Ashveer, thank you for sharing this site with us! I'm going to be checking it every day for sure. :)

thats a lie :p alot of the vocabulary used is different in hindi compared to urdu "aap ki tareef" in urdu means a completely different thing as compared to with hindi thats just a start
yes its very similar AND MUCH MUCH more similar to hindi than punjabi is but there are still some differences

but i was also referring to the script as well

sometimes the example sentences here can be really really complicated; it'd be better if they included a couple, one of which was much simpler while the other was more complicated. for example, the model sentence for the most recent term, latt araoni, is way way way too complicated to learn anything more than the word in question. it's easier (for me at least) to infer grammatical structures from example sentences, rather than have them expressly dictated, but in sentences like these, the grammar is too complex to be remotely decipherable for anyone seeking to learn.
