Are you on this team? Is there a way to get them feedback?

Seems like a team with some resources (they have vardi, saaps, decent mix) which means theres tons of potential! The choreo is just not going to get them anywhere if the team wants to compete, I have some comments I'd like to send em.

Between UW, Iowa State, Iowa, Detroit etc the midwest could be a nice pocket of bhangra for next few years if the teams get their ish together and improve. A midwest comp would be interesting a good way to get these teams an opportunity to do so

Also everyone, the videos are in order as if it were on a timeline. The last video is harder to see but when the lights turn off, we put on glow in the dark masks and dance. It cannot be captured in video.

Feel free to comment back and tell us what we can improve on. We have come a long way since 2010 to now 2011. The 3rd video is out most recent one.

Thanks everyone!

Get them on BTF.  Even if you dont post (like a lot of people here), the exposure to music, ideas, and people tend to generate large changes in the status quo...aka comps in the midwest.

only advice is to watch a lot of videos (bhangra performances). Teams like Sgpd and Nj are teams that you could watch but the best ones to watch are from India. Hope this helps :)

We are also a team that likes to incorporate bits of hip-hop into our choreo as you can all see. Feel free to give positive and negative feedback!

pretty much what everyone else said, get the captains on btf, and get them to use the resources on it. While its fine to incorporate hip hop moves and such, this style of choreo will make it tough for you guys to compete often. Look at a team like vcu/cmu/uva/other east coast coed college teams, and notice how their choreo is much more traditional. It might take a while for you all to get used to that style, but thats what practice/btf/youtube is for. Of course you guys don't have to change your style/choreo, and if this is the style you want to dance, then its all good, but it will make it hard to compete outside of the small mixed comps in the midwest.

also, as for comps in the midwest, i feel like there havent been any because the general interest in bhangra hasnt been huge, outside of michigan. anyone else from the midwest have thoughts on that?

i like it its actually refreshing....fun to watch, yah there are def ways to improve technique and all, but that can come with time and as people have said, getting more involved in btf. but I like the general spirit of it...just having fun, and you guys actually can differentiate urself from a bunch of "awesome" teams that are starting to look the same these days anyways. Compete or not compete, just have fun.

Swi, I agree it would be nice to have a pocket of bhangra teams within the midwest and we honestly are trying, but being from a state like Iowa (I dance for Iowa State), there isn't a large crowd for us to draw from to retain a team. I know part of it is being a collegiate team so people graduate, etc. but I know from experience we also struggle with just getting people to show up to tryouts, so we have an ever changing team almost semester to semester. This means we keep on having to reteach routines, etc. so, instead of cleaning and coming up with choreography, we have to play catch up. Eventually, it ends up being mostly local gigs for us. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how to keep dancers motivated to stay from semester to semester (we have people quit at semester sometimes), I would really appreciate it. It's something we've struggled with and I would like to hear any thing you guys do at other schools, etc.

Also, I have to say props to Hawkeye Bhangra for maintaining their group of 8 through the whole year last year and getting into ADZ at Madison and then Rangla Punjab at Chicago last because we know how much work they put into it and it's great they could represent the state of Iowa somewhere other than Iowa!

Yeah, I think a lot of the midwest teams can speak to this. I mean, damn, it's hard to get a consistent team of 12 together at a school with a reasonably large Indian population like UChicago (yeah, we are a lot smaller than UW, ISU, or even Northwestern, but SASA is huge at UofC).

I feel like getting more people from these teams on BTF will help broaden horizons somewhat, at least in terms of finding new stuff to draw from. And hopefully I can get this team going to the point where we're good enough to join you guys at ADZ in a year or two. It's in our backyard, after all.
