Advice on starting Bhangra?

Hey guys, I want to ask about starting Bhangra. I'm already 18 in my last year of high school (uni next year) and the past year I really fell in love with the dance, I'm Punjabi so I've been exposed to Bhangra my whole life but this past year I've been watching competition videos non-stop, and I don't know there's just something about it that recently started getting into. Any ways I'm already pretty old and was just wondering if I should still start it. A lot of people I know started when they were much younger so would it be weird to start at this age? I would love to do competitions, and I really can't do any moves properly so I'd be starting from square one, how long would it take to get good, and is it worth the time? This is something I think I'd be fairly passionate about, I also wanna get good as fast as possible so any advice on that?. I also live near Brampton, so more than enough academies to learn from.

Thanks.

Never too old. A large number of people on college teams pick it up their freshman year so you're fine. It may be a tad more competitive where you are but nothing hard work can't take care of.

I agree, you're never too old to learn. I started when I was 16 or 17 but I was interested for much longer than that. Watching teams like TBT and Nachdi Jawani made me really fall in love with the art form that is Bhangra.

There are many people in their late 20's that start learning Bhangra, as well as older folk who do it for the cardio. Don't think 18 is old...

As for deciding on how long it would take to get good, all you need to do is practice. Dance at practices, dance in your room, try to mirror moves you see in videos. It takes time, so don't beat yourself up if you don't get it at first. The basics are essential so don't overlook them.

it's never too late to start learning, if you're 18 and you have an opportunity to learn and be on a team then you should go for it. i've taught bhangra to zumba classes full of middle aged women and been surprised at how quickly they picked up the moves; the key to learning any sort of dance is picking up the beats and being able to stay with the music. the good thing about bhangra is once you get the basics down proper, it becomes easier to learn more. bhangra's one of those things that once you learn, it stays with you for life, but if u don't make the jump and get into it you'll probably always be envious when you see people doing it. the best way to really push yourself to get better is to dance with more experienced dancers, just try to keep up and pick up as much from the people you dance with as possible.

18 is def. not too late. Many dancers start dancing their freshman year in college- usually for their school. You should def. do it.

I started when I was 20 with no prior experience except an appreciation for the music. You're way ahead of me!

I first danced when I was 17. You're very young still. Starting when you're like 13 is only a Canadian thing...lol Go for it! Good luck!

Definitely contact some of the teams and figure out when you can drop by! I started my sophomore year of college, and was competing by the spring semester. It is all a measure of how dedicated you are to getting better and getting to that competition level. Having the enthusiasm and drive so early is great and will only take you far. Once you start, you can't stop and it's the best feeling. Plus, people as hype as you are start and learn so much so fast. There will be so many people to learn from and get you started. You've got nothing to worry about. I know people 25+ that are still competing. You have years left bud.

I'm a freaking buddha dancing for 7 years and I'm still learning how to do jugni correctly...so 18 is young! Don't fret.

As for learning to prepare? Don't rush into getting competition ready. Take your time with the basics. Once you got them down, it'll be easy and quick to get comp-ready. I'm sure a lot of "veterans" here will agree.

Everyone learns differently, but I usually find recording myself do moves/choreo is helpful. I see what looks wrong then I correct myself in front of a mirror and then practice the corrections without a mirror to solidify my muscle memory. Obviously, having guidance from an experienced dancer during this learning process makes things easier.

Hope that helps!
