So last week I walk into the Fremont Gurdwara (on Gurdwara Road, no less!) seeking instruction in the Punjabi language. I was pleasantly surprised. Mr. Pritam Singh (former professor of Punjabi at San Jose State University) gave me some introductory materials (vowel sounds, all alphabets, their names, example of word beginning with that alphabet, pronunciation guide, etc.) and for about 45 minutes went over the sounds of vowels and how they sound when combined with consonants. He then told me to memorize the alphabet and come back once I have - which I will do soon...
So, anyone looking for instruction in Punjabi, try the Gurdwara - they have a daylong camp and it is possible to work out evening or weekend instruction, just go to their front desk and ask - they seem very flexible and are definitely really welcoming. You'll have to go there, calling them seems to bring up the Dial-up modem sound...
