Boston Bhangra is proud to bring Channi Singh from Alaap to be our special guest artist for the Boston Bhangra Competition 2008. He is one of the true pioneers of UK Bhangra and has many hits including Makhna, Jind Mahi, Bhabiye Ne Bhabiye, Kabardar, Munde Kanan Wich Munda, etc. This will be his first appearance in New England, and we look forward to him exciting the crowd with his timeless songs.

You can watch a video of him on our website: http://www.bostonbhangra.com/bbc

We will also have 94.5's DJ Pup Dawg and Dhol Beat International's DJ Impact as our MC's for the event!

ALAAAAAAAP.

excellent...boston bhangra frequently brings artists that everyone can enjoy...some times the young generation singers get really annoying to the older folks.

boston bhangra does a good job of bringing in good older school singers. When I was in 2006, it was heera group. THey were sick. The thing with old school singers or groups is that they are great show men. They know how to entertain the crowd in a very clean, respectful way for a family environment. Alaap is going to be crazy. Im expecting good things this year. Watching the dvd from last year, Balwinder safri was a disappointment. It was so obvious that he lip-synced everything........side note: I would love to see a competition bring someone like harbhajan mann, harjit harman, nirmal sidhu, ravinder grewal, etc.......these guys are pretty low key in terms of performing big time, but they make bomb ass songs. Get rid of guys like lehmbar and kaka. They're fudus anyways

all that people want is for people who will actually sing their songs, not lip synch...any idiot can push play and lip synch through their stuff, but live performances by artists that everyone knows, classic...like meistro said, heera group was INSANE, prolly the best live bhangra artist performance at a competition i have seen along with dhol foundation at blowout back in 2003

Alaap is off the hizeee....The only issue I see is that Boston crowd is more POP than true Desi like Alaap. Alaap would be great at DDA or VIBC where people and the comp is more Desi. Boston Bhangra should get someone like Raghav, Juggy D, Baba Khan, or something more like that.

I think a team last year placed with a black dude doing the soldier boy then you had a pure desi team like AVA who didn't even place lol. The crowd was dead until the soldier boy busted out. What trips me out is the crowd, organizers, most teams are mostly south indian but yet that bust out with pure Pindu Singers its like wtf...lol

Boston is very diverse, we can't control the type of crowd we get at out competition......its a bhangra competition and there for there will be a Punjabi singer...from you statement its seems like you are trying to say that Boston Bhangra should host South Indian artist?

I think it should be catered to more south indians. My opinion comes from being apart of the comp. I seen the teams, judges, crowd. One of the judges was Minish Patel Hotel Owner. Knew nothing about bhangra but was a donor. I seen the crowd's reaction to legendary singer Balwinder Safri, it was minimal aside from LBC going nuts.

Boston wasn't very diverse it was 80% south indian. But the comp itself is organized great. Safri is a great performer as is Channi, however its like putting Lil Wayne in front of a Tim Mcgraw crowd, it doesn't mix. These are the things that hurt the actual competition, but the way they treat there teams is very good.

But still, it is a Bhangra competition, so I think it would make more sense to have a Punjabi singer rather than someone else. I can see what you mean about catering to the demographics especially in Boston, and maybe a more South Asian type of exhibition act (in Boston's case, besides Boston Di Jawani ;D) might possibly help bring people in but honestly, most of the reasons I hear of people going to Bhangra competitions is to see Bhangra obviously and maybe a few people might want to go because of a sick guest artist.

I am pretty sure the audience wasn't 80% South Indian. Not to say that South Indian people were not present but that is a significantly high number you stated.....From the feedback that I got from the competition a lot of people didn't go crazy for Safri because they didn't think he was a good performer. It had nothing to do with the fact that Boston Bhangra's crowd is 80% South Indian and they didn't appropriate Balwinder. When Heer and Group went on the year before the crowed went crazy including the teams because Heer is a good performer and they actually jumped on stage and interacted with the crowd, again i am just stating what other people have brought to my concern.....People who have the two DVDs from the competition can watch the two performances and make their own opinion...From the feedback the teams and the audience has given, we took Alaap into consideration....Hopefully Alaap will fulfill the teams/audience expectations this year.

I personally don't think it makes seance to have South Indian performances at a bhangra competition even if we assuming that all of our audience is South Indian...Its like saying well %80+ people in the audience speak English since they are in America so we can bring Eminem to the competition.

Also people who attend a Bhangra competition come to watch bhanga and possible learn about the culture. They don't come there to watch South Indian artist sing. If a large amount of people are South Indian and they are coming knowing they are going to watch Bhangra and Punjabi singer and continue to come back..I think that speaks volumes.

in no way bro am i trying to attack you, thanks for the compliments as well.

no offense taken brother.....I don't mean someone south indian as a performer, I mean someone a little more mainstream like Juggy D or Raghav

ITs a dance competition not bhangra, if it were a real bhangra competition AVA would have won or at least placed. Soulja Boy isn't bhangra it is dance..... It would be more appropriate to steer away from teams that do soulja boy as most proper bhangra judges wouldn't tolerate that in a bhangra competition.

So in a competition where you have a live team like AVA with RAju singing boliyaan and not placing on almost a flawless routine, and then you go and get MR Patel to judge and a team with an black guy doing superman places in uncalled for thats why you contradict yourselves

We're looking forward to Alaap rocking the stage. Alaap has plenty of traditional/new age songs that he can mix it up with, including Jind Mahi and Makhna. Everybody can relate to those songs, along with some hardcore ones he will throw in. He's also a very good performer, so it should be a good time.

Also, when it comes to Mr. Patel being a judge, I would like to know what insider information you have Mr. Slammer on our judges? We take great pride in selecting our judges, and ensuring that they stick to our scoresheet. We want diversity at our competition, whether it be hardcore traditional or a mix of new age, and the teams that do well at our competition are the ones that mix old/new well, or are exceptionally good at what they do. We want teams that will innovate, and we try to have them judged as fairly as possible based on our scoresheet. We have the information published on our website so that all teams can view it. We're not necessarily looking for hip hop, and just because a segment was played last year, doesn't mean it will win this year, but as long as the teams are performing well according to our scoresheet, they will place highly. Please keep in mind that all of the teams that placed at our competition did very well in the Bhangra circuit as a whole last year. We don't consider ourselves a "hardcore" traditional competition, but we do consider ourselves a Bhangra competition, where we are open to different teams interpretations of Bhangra. Again, we try to do what we can to ensure that all placements are as fair as possible.

TheSlammer, instead of talking about the performer choice, you're deciding to attack BBC as a competition and the judging panel? Everyone seems to have their own opinions on who should have placed last year and that goes to show that the judges also had a difficult decision to make.

Honestly dude, you're opinion is fine, but racist comments are not welcomed. ("A team with a black guy doing superman places" indicates that you partly think teams with black people should not place).

A lot of competitions these days seem to try to get mainstream artists and there's nothing wrong with that. I look forward to seeing Alaap!

Hi Boston !

The decision to bring 'Channi Singh' from UK, at the Boston Bhangra Championship is exciting, and the organisers should try their best to bring every type of talent from 6 to 60, that sets the mood of the Hon'ble Audience.

What I feel that there should be a fresh voice in every bhangra competition and that would not just be perfect for the Hon'ble Public, but also give Golden Opportunity/Chance to the young talented voices in India or abroad.

BEST WISHES !!

-AC/Chd.
