Data Recovery...

N e one know of a free download for a data recovery program? I have all my practice videos on my passport and now my files say they're empty and if I click on it a pop up window says I have to format the passport, which means I'll lose all the other stored data as well as the inaccessible video clips I can't access. My boyfriend tried two different programs n they both did a good job recovering the data but they both wouldn't give me the recovered data unless I paid money for the program. And this was not the deal when we started the programs in the first place so it was hella irritating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. :-\

this happened with my western digital "my book", but i just unplugged it and plugged it in and it was fine
try just pressing cancel, then unplug and replug it in, and if that doesnt work, then just hit cancel and see if u can access it just from my computer

Hmm... the prob is, my BF says, is that I always just unplug the passport (external data storage unit) without actually dismounting it through the computer system commands, so that's why it's all screwed up. The data is still there... It wasn't deleted, but I can't see it. I have Windows Vista. I have many times opened the passport and disconnected it properly (learned my lesson bigtime!) since my losses and I have also shut down and restarted my computer many times since then. Still, the data is inaccessible. Wish I would have at least uploaded them to YouTube as a back up... and just kept the settings to private... If I don't figure out sumpthin w/in the next week or so, I'm just gunna have to cough up the $$$. Now I'm so traumatized I'll prob keep 5 backups for everything....

You should always unmount any removable storage devices before unplugging them from the system. Sometimes your OS will keep critical files (mbr, swap) in your pc's ram to speed up access to the removable memory. These files need to be put back on to gain the access. This is all the recovery program is doing, rebuilding the file structure. Unfortunately, to get a quality return on your data, you're most likely going to have to use a paid version of a program.

Ufff... Ya I learned my lesson!

Do you recommend any programs out there? I'll have to cough up the $$$ cuz I really want these vids/pics back.
Is my passport OK? Was this just a one time occurance cuz I was irresponsible? Or should I remove all the data and reformat it and then put the data back on?

As for other things I plug into my computer... Am I supposed to dismount my iPhone? I just unplug it from either end when I'm done charging it or moving stored data from my iPhone to my hard drive... I've been dismounting my card reader most of the time... And I'll be getting a D-SLR camera again soon so will be tranferring photos... I never knew there was a dismount icon.. oops... I didn't even know there was such a function!
