Gun Control?

I recently had a heated discussion with a friend about the validity of the 2nd amendment and the states duties to issue stricter laws on Gun Control- A week later the huge tragedy in Arizona occurred.

In light of the recent shooting, I am even more pressed on the government amending our 2nd constitutional "right."

What are your thoughts?? Let's keep it civil :)

2nd amendment is outdated and needs to be changed BUT if people want guns, they will get guns. There really isn't anything you can do about it. Look at the assload of shootings that occur in Toronto. Although, I'm referencing the shootings that occur in a "gunless" Canada, the truth of the matter is that most of these guns are smuggled across the border from the states. It may be possible that prohibition of firearms in the states may result in a decrease in shootings in canada due to a dent in canada/us border gun smuggling. Wasnt there some sort of trial prohibition of guns or something in chicago which ended up failing miserably (correct me if im wrong)?

....try explaining gun control to texans

A ban on guns would cause way too much uproar. I doubt it would even get past Congress because of the unpopularity of the idea. Congressmen think too much about reelections nowadays to care whats right or wrong anymore......not saying all Congresspeople are like that, but a majority of them are.

Gun Control shouldn't be the issue. It really is Gun Safety. More people die in accidents with guns than when they are used to commit a crime. On the other hand when you sell a gun to somebody there is no telling that one day they will go super crazy and kill someone. On the other other hand there are instances where guns have actually stopped crimes, wether it be a cop or a licensed gun owner who has used his gun to halt a robbery or any other type of crime. So here's the question. Would you ban all guns with the risk that one day a situation will arise where you may need to defend yourself? I say get rid of anything fully automatic and have a more vigorous test and safety course that people need to pass before they own a weapon.

The 2nd Amendment was a way for the Southern states to ensure Congress would not strip them of their only line of defense from slave rebellion- their militias. People want to fetishize the 2nd Amendment and make it into a noble cause and just means for citizens to protect themselves from a tyrannical government when the truth is it was a means of state sponsored terrorism. Also, just because it is in the constitution does not mean it is the word of god and should be protected by all means. The constitution has had a number of immoral and unjust provisions which have been amended and they should have been. Those who want to claim the constitution is the word of God are off base, it is a document written by flawed individuals who committed great atrocities against humanity. The Constitution was poorly written in a number of ways and has been poorly interpreted along the way. We deify the constitution way too much, I don’t give a damn what Jefferson or Washington would think about our country right now, their time and experiences were different…and truth be told they were not great people.

We draw a line with gun control; I think that line needs to be pushed back even more. No, a citizen cannot develop a nuclear weapon in their backyard and claim its their 2nd amendment right, so I think you should be able to own a gun- but the state should heavily regulate and monitor the use of it. One of the arguments pro-gun people use is that it allows for law abiding citizens to protect themselves and others from violent maniacs- where were those people here? Arizona is about as pro-gun as any state in this country and you can even carry a weapon in plain view without any permit, yet no one could stop this guy. Why? Because it takes a matter of 10 seconds for someone to create havoc like that, and no one can get into to their gun that fast.

I am all for stricter gun regulation and for enforcing gun ownership laws in a better way.
