is there anyway how to make dhol sound better?

hello everybody

i'm just wondering that is there anyway how to make dhol sound better(in case for live recording, live performance, etc.)? you're most welcome to give me as many advice as you want. for example: barrel(amb, sheesham, or fiber), inside appearance & outside appearance(mustard oil, varnish, paint, masala, etc.), rope style(single roped or double roped[cross roped]), dagga[(masala or non-masala)&(thick male skin or thin female skin)], tilli[(gbc or remo)&(more sustain or less sustain)], etc.

barrel: taali, a few people I know who do recording say that a straight barrel that is tuned properly is really good for recording in a studio for a song .


finish: I prefer natural or clear varnish (only if the drums are prone to humidity problems), stopped the oiling and masala shit... bloody stinks.


rope style : depends on the drum, prefer cross rope for drums with 11 hooks since its easier to tune the bass than tuning a 9 hooks dhol that is cross roped ( would do single rope on 9 hook drums, 10 hook drums have to be single roped because of the even number)


dagga: no masala, thick grey goatskin and i mean thick...fuck the white skins. male female meh, don`t know or care.


thili: gbc but tuned low but also high enough to have some sharpness in it, but not too sharp or gets annoying to listen to. Remo fiberskyn ambassador tuned low or high, I find it sounds good. as much sustain since it has to be evenly tuned, if it has little sustain then most likely its not tuned properly. some dholis who record in india like kukki jogi use goatskin

i'm about to say that you can also cross-roped on 10 lugs but first: cut the rope in half before you can cross-rope(i can't explain how)(it's up to you)

if oiling and masala stinks like hell, what happened if i use air freshener(homemade or commercial products like febreze)? ???

I'm not so sure, but male goatskin is used for dagga side and female goatskin is used for tilli side, it's just one difference due to thickness of goatskin, correct me if i'm wrong :S

Specifications, that i would say would be optimal for any dhol, would have to be:


Rounded kaali taali barrel with mustard oil on it, (if theres varnish or paint on it, sand it down) Oil allows the wood to breathe the best compared to varnish or paint. It smells but for like a day or two, if you leave it out in the sun for a few hours it'll be gone in a day (makesure there are no cracks in the wood)


Cotton rope, single roped (i find it better to tune it)


Roped, Thick Gray Goatskin treated with oil and moisturizing lotion. NO MASALA


Indian Desi head secured down by a rim, using 11 hooks to tighten and tune them. High level of sustain (for recording i've seen people use 22 hooks for super fine tuneing)
