Jatt Di Joon Buri - Translation help!

i remember, a while back, that a few people mentioned that they would be interested in doing a bit of song translation here and there on BTF, if for no other reason than to help out those people who are unfortunately less than fluent in Punjabi.


so i thought i'd get the requests rolling.


does someone want to give me a line-by-line translation of Jatt Di Joon Buri, by Babbu Maan? i understand the overall idea of the song; i'm looking for a more specific, pinpointed translation that will help me learn some of the words in the song that i dont know.

Okay, so I can do bit by bit .... Also might sound a bit silly

List of rough definitions from this verse:

• kade: sometimes
• sad: burnt
• gayi: happened (past-feminine tense) (plural is gayian)
• bor: where water is extracted from the ground (I'm not sure about technicals)
• khad: stood
• gaya: happened (past-masculine tense)
• penda: put on/occuring on/ laying on
• soka: drought (someone might have to correct me on that one)
• sabh: errything
• kuch: thing(s)
• had: flood
• gaya: happened; occured
• kishtan: payments of loans
• diyan:someone's possession
• tutt: break
• aage: many people came (lol); or someone respectable came
• chak ke: pick(ed) up
• thaana: police station
• jatt: playas
• joon: lifestyle
• buri: difficult (feminine tense)
• tadap: suffer (can be pronounced tadaph or tadaf)
• mar: die
• jana: to go

In lines 1-4 he's talking about straight up kheti (farming), and is describing the hardships jatt has to endure. Specifically, he points out that jatt is plagued with problems such as:

• his motor burns (motor used to pump water out of ground, which is used for crops),
• the pipe/routing system his water supply is coming from (underneath the ground) holds up on him, essentially breaks (not an expert in this),
• sometimes there is drought,
• sometimes everything gets flooded,
• he's in debt, he can't pay his loans,
• the police are constantly pestering him --- he actually says "Oh aage chad ke thaana," which literally translates "the whole damn police force just rolled up."

In lines 7-8, he's saying that the jatt's lifestyle is difficult, he's going to "suffering suffering die." Actually just saying he's going to die suffering.

NIce, I think it's important to remember that, in punjabi, the meaning of a word, phrase, sentence can change depending on context etc. Defining them word for word is, more or less, more confusing than it's worth lol. Also certain words have double meanings and sometimes it's referencing something else entirely.

and as far as the word by word stuff goes, i think it helps when understanding idiomatic phrases like "oh aage chak ke thaana" to have the literal meaning of words like thaana. if he just put "oh shit the whole police force rolled up" i would have assumed that "thaana" means "police force" and not "station." i do understand enough of the basics of punjabi grammar (at least as far as it is similar to hindi) to be able to piece together the full translation from the word-by-word.

But it kind of goes with any language. It might be just easier for the learner to learn it in a specific context, and then as they are building up, they'll learn other meanings and connotations as well eventually.

Even if you continue to translate the Hindi words, I wouldn't mind - not everyone here might know the meaning of the all the words and I'll rather have someone explain them, then try to ask later and nobody respond.
