[POLL] Next gen consoles - XBox One vs PS4

With all the announcements leading up to and including E3, I'm curious what people think. Maybe my mind is skewed, but Microsoft's ridiculous attitude on DRM, fees for used games, constant connection, and likely ripoff that XBL Gold will be have me firmly in the PS4 camp. That said, I'm not a die-hard gamer, I barely have time to play my PS3, and I know it's all about what console your friends are on. What do you think?

PS4 will have similar restrictions to Xbox One, they've built the framework but insist that ti's the publisher's decision. So yes, you can share that game but if EA wants to check and take a cut they will potentially be able to do so in the future. The push is from publishers (see: Sim City), and since Xbox has shown it's willing to front the press publishers are more likely to give them exclusives moving forward.

Honestly, the way the tablet software prices are dropping, I wouldn't be surprised you get the graphics of ps2 game or xbox game on a tablet sometime soon, with the playability of one too.

I think PS4 wins in gaming. But the Xbox has some cool stuff when it comes to entertainment. Honestly, I think the PS4 is the same things as the PS3 just with upgraded graphics. Xbox One is completely different than the Xbox 360. Microsoft actually spent time making their console better while Sony just upgraded their graphics. For gamers, all that really matters is graphics, but, Xbox attracts more than just gamers. Microsoft market for the Xbox One is not just gamers but families. The fact that the whole family can use the Xbox One makes me believe that Microsoft is going to sell a lot more units than PS4.

I'm def going with the PS4, also I went into EB games today (gamestop) and the workers told me that people should def pre order the consoles ASAP, because the consoles are in high demand, I'm not sure if it's like this for other stores , but for Eb games or gamestop, you can pay an initial $50 dollar deposit, and after that you can come back whenever and add money to the "fund" until the release of the system, you can come back give them 5 dollars or give them 30 it all depends on you, the reason you should pre order it is just your name will be ahead of everyone else on the shipping and you will get your system before the people who sign up later. They said that in the upcoming weeks it is going to get really busy so they suggest pre ordering ASAP. Anyways this is just a suggestion if any of you guys are interested. Also according to the guy at the store the ratio is 8 : 1 for the PS4 lol.

microsoft really dug themselves into a deep grave with their marketing/release press for the XB1. the useless focus on movies and TV shows makes the console seem more like an entertainment box that just so happens to play games. if i am going to buy a game console, that is all i want. fluffy bloatware-like features are not only annoying, they drive up the price of the device itself for no appreciable reason. i'm also thoroughly sketched out by the "constantly connected and operational Kinect" business.


so PS4 for me. eventually i might get an XB1 for halo, but other than that there are simply no XB1-exclusive IPs that i'm really dying to own.

Pretty much agree with you on all accounts. Even for Halo Bungie is coming out with Destiny which looks pretty similar and the Ouya is pretty bad. It seemed to have potential in the early stages but honestly your better off just playing those games on your phone.

I used to be a die hard gamer back in the N64, Xbox (Halo 1), and PS2 days, but I don't have time and have outgrown video games unfortunately.

I heard with the $100 lower price and less restrictions overall and ability to play used games, the PS4 seems to be more popular.

That being said I preordered a PS4 at Gamestop; planning to sell it for at least a $100 markup before Christmas on Craigslist.


As far as PS3 vs Xbox 360, I feel like the controller is better overall on Xbox than Playstation, and people use Xbox 360 more than PS3, so it'll be interesting to see how the next generation of consoles fare.

I find it difficult to believe that the XB1 needs to be authenticated once a day. Does that mean I can never go on vacation? And of course the naming convention itself is horrendous.. I guess it doesn't matter to me since I pretty much stopped (console) gaming last generation.

no you're missing the point. The games need to be authenticated to play since you can share games. This is a continuous connection for online play obviously, but not for single player on the console. All you have to do is authenticate the game to your account once every 24 hours. This way if you have spotty internet (let's say you still use a phoneline as your internet), you can still play with all the benefits of a digital game without having to be constantly connected

If you go on vacation, nothing happens. When you come back you'll have to authenticate to continue playing the game that's all.

Ouya games are going to be horrible, but its the only thing powering indie games right. No restrictions and its a place where you can have more titles outsourced because big game development is being restricted to a few titles. Think about how many big games are there, and how many of those end with a number in a sequence (cod, elder scrolls, halo, etc)

I got a 360, never got a PS3, but I'm most likely going with PS4 this generation. Microsoft has already confirmed that you have to check in online every 24 hours in order to play games (and every 1 hour if you're playing games on your account on a friend's system) and are making it difficult to trade in used games and trade games between friends. Sure the internet connectivity might not be an issue to some, but why support a company that seems so bent on restricting previously standard user features instead of adding new features? I thought the whole point of buying a console was for easy accessibility to games as opposed to needless restrictions.

I hate Kinect as the games surrounding it are awful. Its supposed benefits of hands free browsing are outweighed by the negatives of having to pay at least $100 extra for a peripheral I don't want and won't use. And for people arguing that this will be an all-in-one entertainment box for a family looking to watch TV, I seriously doubt someone's going to pay $500 for a console when they can buy a smart TV for like a fifth of that price. One might argue that it's the TV experience and games put together, but it's already been stated how much Microsoft plans to restrict access to games. They really shot themselves in the foot with their PR so far almost to the point that they've almost taken themselves out of the console race.

Haven't kept completely up to date with Xbox One/PS4 so I might've missed this but can you possibly link an article or something where it says that PS4 will have similar restrictions? I know that Sony's letting publishers decide whether they want to charge online fee for Free To Play games on PS4, but that's as far as I've heard in terms of publisher's decisions for restrictions on the PS4.

That's makes sense (though I still dislike the practice).. they need to disseminate that information much better. Most places say something like "must check-in every 24 hours," and I interpret that as written.

I actually bought a ps3 a month ago, really wanted to play uncharted and last of us. I was hoping ps3 would have kingdom hearts 3 and final fantasy vs 13 before the ps4 came out but that's not happening. I do plan on buying the ps4 but I plan on holding off for abit. Destiny is still going to be on the current gen consoles so I have something to play until price drops happen. Might take awhile though.
