RMS Levels?

What is the average RMS levels (simples way to put it: received loudness.) do most of you keep for over all team mixes?
Recently I discovered that the best results I receive from my mixes is when I keep is between -8db and -6db.
Usually closer to -8 before the drop, and about a little over -7db.


My question what do you guys keep it at? (If you pay attention to it).

I don't' worry about RMS so much as difference between RMS and peak (e.g. Crest Factor). You're numbers seem fine to me though.

For simple mixes I push it to 6-8 dB difference, but on something more complex I try to stay at 8-12 db to keep the dynamics healthy for the master.

Trust your ears above all else, I think you're probably fine. I would check with guys who have really gone into a studio and done the work though (Sanjoy, Rav-E, etc)

I don't usually worry about RMS levels because of the difference of levels among mixes. I do a quick replay gain on see how much above 0db my mix is and I try to aim at around 10db. 12 is also possible too but that requires really fine tuning the compressor.

I use RMS and my ear. I noticed as long as I keep the same level of RMS between segments (I group each segment in ableton and master than that way) and teh same leveling, while making sure vocal levels are the same.


I just wanted to make sure I wasnt only being anal about it. I, honestly, recently started paying attention to make sure my mix was all at the same level.

0.o what? lol. Are you focusing on gain reduction?

If you have Pro Tools, I would recommend using Phasecope to test the RMS Levels. I've not used it personally myself, but I know of some people that have used it before and said that it works fine.

Like Swi said, those numbers seem OK.

0.o what? lol. Are you focusing on gain reduction?

In essence yeah, but more important than reduction is just the scanned track gain (which may very well be the RMS, not too sure actually haha). But Anywhere from -10 to -12 is my range.
