Season drawbacks?

ok so, we've seen the results of black friday and all of its expectations and all.....so do u think that people are going to be drawing back on the whole festivity of this season as well? like no christmas lights out, no more people climbing their roofs, etc (sadly I havent seen anything and usually people do put stuff up at this time of year)

Should we just draw back from all this? Or do you think that as a community we need to do something to reinstitute faith into people?

Christmas is overrated... No one actually cares for what Christmas stands for, they just want the gifts and parties that come with this time of the season...

But, isn't that what Christmas actually stands for (gifts and Santa and so on)? I mean, we all know it's not actually the birthday of Jesus Christ...

"The date of celebration is not thought to be Jesus' actual date of birth. It may have been chosen to coincide with the winter solstice, which the ancient Romans celebrated on December 25."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas

Didn't mean to offend anyone with that, in any case even if many people know that it is not meant to be his actual birthdate, I know that many Christians still celebrate it as such and it's still supposed to represent his birthdate. I was just trying to get technical and be cheeky with Vick. Only from more recent scholarly research do we know that it's not really his birthday.

BUT ANYWAY not to digress from the topic at hand. Yes, I think people will be on the downlow this season, probably not the best year for shopping...Should we draw back? No, Christmas decorations are always nice and yeah, it's better if people resisted feeling like they were in a recession regardless of that actually being the case :) Merry Christmas, everyone!

I think Bart said it the best when he was asked what the meaning of christmas was: Santa Clauses birthday.

I think for me, as a non christian obviously, because our scheduled lives adhere to christian tradition, it has been a time to spend with family. I have never celebrated christmas, with such an extended time off from either school or work, I think people can never loose the fact that its family time. Whatever little family I had in Canada, Christmas personally represented a time where we could sit and talk and laugh, and thats important no matter what religion you affilate yourselves with.

Christmas is an event, no matter which way you look at it, religiously or not, its an event. I dont think we should scale back. I am not one for materialism, but there is something about seeing houses lit up with lights, and kids playing with the thought of christmas that is good for the soul.

Excuse me while I change my pad. Thats the fruitest post I have ever made.

Also...when else would we be able to enjoy candy canes? Admit it...we ALL love candy canes...especially those starburst fruit flavored ones, right? right? haha

But i also agree with Summy...it represents a time where family can just get together, talk, eat, and relax over some (in my family's case) chai, papdi chaat, gold guppe, bhel puri, samosas, and lassi (i'm obviously homesick...)...
