Yeh I neva got it either and I think it's called speed walking. I think it's because you lose a lot less energy walking then running therefore are able to go much further in the long run?? I dunno lol hahaha im really just shooting an arrow in the dark here.

Using this logic, you might say "Why use a bow and arrow, when you can just use a gun?" Yet archery is an Olympic sport, too. Olympic sports don't have to be practical or make sense; they just have to be a physically demanding activity or some sort of body-eye coordination skill that is widely practiced.

Race walking is a completely different discipline from running. There are different rules, different strategies, and different muscle groups engaged. If it were merely a simplified version of running, you would see all the world-class runners competing in it, but you don't. As ridiculous as it looks, I see no reason why it should not be an Olympic sport.
