Trying out for my college’s bhangra team

Hey guys!
I’m an incoming 2nd year in college. I tried out for my school’s bhangra team in the beginning of the year (beginning of my freshman year) and at the time, I had zero experience with bhangra, but I do have experience with modern, ballet, and classical dance (kuchipudi). Unfortunately, I didn’t get in haha, not surprised. Right now, I’ve been watching tons of comp vids and how-to videos and I’ve been getting a little better. My bf did bhangra for many years and he’s been helping me out. I want to try-out again and I’m serious about making it. Any tips on how to get in and get better at bhangra? Also, is it too late for me to join? Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!
PS- sorry for the long post
TLDR: I want to try-out for my college’s bhangra team but I don’t have a lot of experience. Any tips on how to get better and be a better candidate?

Hi,

Thanks for coming to BTF for this question, and I am excited to hear that you are serious about making the team and taking the right steps to make it happen! Not sure what videos/how-to's you are watching but here are a few things I would maybe recommend if I were currently in your shoes:

1.) reach out to the captains of the team and ask for feedback about why you didn't make it. they may be able to help pinpoint some mistakes

2.) if you're comfortable, try sending your video out to some people who can provide feedback. or post it in BTF or feel free to message me, because this website has a lot of people who are interested in helping others! it'll be very hard for anyone to help you improve without knowing where the flaws (and pros) are in your dancing. but people are very receptive to helping others out so the payoff will be worth it!

3.) if you haven't watched these videos (Learn Bhangra by Lavesh), these would be great to learn from a very experienced dancer:
4.) the best thing you're doing right now is watching a ton of comp videos. keep up with doing that and aim to watch a brand new video every couple of days to give yourself a diverse view of competitive bhangra. it'll help you start to notice differences in form/style/dancer maturity, which will help you start to learn what your preferences are.

Hey!
Thank you so much for your feedback! This makes me feel a lot better about everything. I wasn’t really sure where to start so thank you so much for the advice!!
