Ban on plastic props

I don't know why teams are still using plastic shikke/sapps/ or bamboo khunde. I think we should it keep it completely folk by using authentic props. Teams that use props which aren't authentic should be deducted points. I've seen several posts on this forum by certain people talking about keeping it "folk" or all "bhangra". So lets stick to it shall we?

Bro i totally agree, everything non-traditional should be banned and points should be deducted here's a short list i've compiled of infractions that should result in disqualification:
1. saaps should not have handles, everyone knows traditional folk saaps don't have handles
2. khunday should all have kokay in them and be at least 6 ft long. any khunda shorter than 6 ft should result in disqualification.
3. girls should not dress as guys...DISFUCKINGQUALIFICATION!!!
4. girls should not do bhangra(disqualification on the grounds of blasphemy), only giddha....only in a family setting....never in front of non family members...sharam huni chai di ah!
5. no synthetic dhol heads, any true traditionalist can distinguish the difference between a traditional dhol head and a synthetic head from a mile away
6. no non traditional props, dandiya are for garba!!!, plastic yo-yo things??? wtf is that some dollar store chinese shit??? lasers=instant disqualification. tambourines???? ain't no gypsy dancing in bhangra wtf bro.
7. bhangra should only be done to traditional songs/boliyan. oh what's that your singer decided to throw in a verse from a diljit song during your live set??? INSTANT FUCKING DISQUALIFICATION!
8. Sound effects...they didn't exist in punjab back in the day, they shouldn't exist anywhere in bhangra now! KILL ALL THE FUCKING GUN SHOTS, "BRUAHHHHS", AND ESPECIALLY THE FUCKING SWORD SLASHES!!!!
9. Non standard motions in bhangra...hopping???? hip hop steps???? spins??? back flips??????? front flips???????? NO!!!!! NONE OF THE FUCKING ABOVE SHOULD BE ALLOWED ANYWHERE IN A BHANGRA SET!
10. Non traditional gimmicks. only gimmick allowed is towers, APD automatically wins every competition ever. DONE!

as you can see i feel very strongly on this matter. i would like to thank spliffstar101 for being brave enough to express this incredibly insightful opinion.

lol +1 for hardeep, the man hits it right on the head.

another example of why it's just not good logic to go by... what about metal plating on saaps? do we deduct for that too, or did that get the "pure folk authentic" certification when shiv chand did it? you should actually take a look at Gibbs' "visual history of bhangra" that's sticky-ed to the forum. you'll find that bhangra has been defined more by change rather than stasis, and that's going to continue to happen. we need to be thinking about how to best share our love for the dance and culture, while maintaining the core of the art form - sweating the small stuff like prop material isn't going to get us there.

the essential problem is, if we start banning new and innovative things because we want to "keep it folk" we will start going backwards and not forward.

Have your opinions on what we should do, and you can stick to that opinion and carry it out. No big deal. But if we limit everyone from doing new things, it will be the beginning of the end.

sure. plastic props don't take us foward. but the moment you start banning stuff, which is the premise of this thread, you limit what can be done. the moment that happens, bhangra will begin to become stagnant.

I wouldn't have a problem if a committee set these kinds of rules for their own competition. That's fine. But a bhangra wide ban? no.

i know not how this story begins...but it has a beginning.... There were 12 in total, noble brothers were they, forged at the same time of wood and cheap iron rivets and washers. saaps they were called, although they disliked this name, for it did not do justice to the nobility of their existance; shikka/shikke, now that was a proper name, a name which projected their strength and steadfastness, an honorable name. for they were honoroble creations; created to add rhythm to an honorable dance of the people. that was the full purpose of their existance to add fervor, excitement, energy, rhythm, harmony to the dance of the people. they began their long journey in a land they knew, a land defined by its history, echos of the past reverberating from the voices of its people, from the sounds of its culture. they were taken from this land, to a place they did not know, a new world. they were treated with the respect they deserved oiled gently to give them the strength to undertake the task at hand. they were taken up, like armaments for the battlefield, confidently held in a state of readiness, prepared to unleash the full potential of their creation. taken up were they by a group of men, men who were unaware that they were still untested boys, boys who claimed to have made friendship with lions. in their hands the shikke were alive, finally put to the task for which they were created, their thundering sounds complimenting the beats of the music. everything was right in the world, but this state of contentment was not meant to last...for they started to fall.... a thundering clap cut short...the silence tragically resounding through the atmosphere...the remaining eleven fell quiet, aware of their brother's fate, unable to mourn the loss because they still had a purpose to fulfill. they should have known...they were all destined for that same fate...one by one they fell; they fell silent, driven to the ground by their own weaknesses....a tragic end to a noble and hopeful existence. they had come so far, been held with respect, had hoped to eventually serve their purpose on the stage of the people, complimenting the music and movements of the dance of the people. it was then that a boy finally became a man, and as a man he vowed he would create shikke of such strength that they would never suffer the same fate....

please ban all the non-bhangra props from bhangra before you start banning props that are simply made out of a different material.

fully support hardeep's side on this - if you want to "keep it folk", there are much larger issues at hand (as close minded as those might be as well)

If people are opposed to plastic saapan then please first address your vardiyan. Kay teama embroidery nal enj lagde ne jaive bijli de kambe hunde ne. Enj lagde ne jaive vyah da lenga paya hunda.

Sure bhangra wide ban might not be a great idea. But what I'm asking you is how does the material of what the props are made of keep bhangra "stagnant" or how does it make bhangra move "forward." I think that all of a sudden that there is this "new" thing, it automatically implies "forwardness" to everyone. All I'm saying is that whether the prop is made of wood, metal, plastic, cloth isn't the factor that is going to be moving anything "forward."
If what the prop is made out of doesn't even matter, then why do you think that plastic/bamboo shouldn't be used?

Shikke aren't cheap. They break. The plastic saap doesn't break. You buy once and you're done. How is this not something that is moving forward?

And if you start banning anything (what props are made out of, limitations on vardi, etc) in favor of being more "folk" or sticking to our "roots" it will spill over into also coming down and restricting the dance.

The moment you stop growing, you start dying.

Reasons why btf is dying, people complain to much LOL, how would we put a ban on this? There's no North American bhangra committee here to do that, every competition is ran by its own committee, it's different in India because they have a bhangra committee or something that can ban certain things and teams , but to ban plastic shikeh makes so sense in my opinion, don't think judges care what material shikeh or kundeh are made of as long as they were used in the routine and were some what presentable. I've seen teams use regular wooden sticks, paint them and put rumaals on them and they looked like kundeh.
