Bhangra Politics in California

This whole thread makes me SICK. THIS IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH BHANGRA!!!

And no Faysal, I am sure more people (in California specifically) will DISAGREE with BABC. I know many of the Pioneer Committee members and I am personally pissed at what BABC is trying to imply.

I think you guys are a great team of dancers, but it's true... good sportsmanship wasn't always present when your team competed and somewhere down the line you may have picked up a bad reputation. Why should any committee have to tolerate it?

Raj from BMW, do not be discouraged. I believe one of the most modern Bhangra guys on the circuit is judging at Pioneer again, meaning the panel isn't "nicely" in favor of Traditional or Modern.

It looks like it's BABC's goal is to plant negative seeds in every participating team's head with their post. How they translate that sort of behavior into being good members of the Bhangra community in the Bay, I dont know?

I am almost positive this thread would not exist had you guys gotten accepted to your applied competitions. By saying awareness is your motive for this thread is hard to believe given your guys' situation. You're a solid group of guys but history is just taking its toll on you guys and nobody but the team can be blamed for that.

...and saying bhangra is filled with politics would be like me saying the sky is blue. most are aware that politics creep into everything in some ways. just how shit is.

+192374932 to kinnell's post that i won't quote so the damn BTF community doesn't whine about having to scroll through a long quote

only competition that i can say that has somewhat objective team selection is Elite 8 which can also be subjective though at the same time for reasons such as attitude and bad sportsmanship.

And this is one reason why I don't really like bhangra competitions in cali, hence I agree with Sharon about out of state teams and comps. Yes a committee has the right to pick whoever they want. However, it sucks when a team tries to apply, but either ends up not applying or gets rejected, because they know people on the committee, their relatives are on the committee, and/or their best friends with people on the committee. I would like to see competitions in california based on talent. If its a matter of holding a committee reliable for a teams actions, isnt it why the teams sign waivers. Anyways, now its 10 times harder for a new team to get into competition, but thats life. Bhangra politics can go on and on, its nothing new. But, to see a teams potential talent being pushed away as well as their younger team, its just sad. Some reasons why I'd rather not dance at bhangra competitions and just dance at school or culture shows for fun. Yes, every team likes to win, but I would like to win based on my talent, not by people you know. What happened to the laid back days when people did bhangra for fun. :(

We already know who is going to place or win at Pioneer Bhangra because the only live team performing has no competition plus the committee has selected some nice judges for them.
O My God BABC! What is wrong with you guys?
You guys think Pioneer is rigged because you got 2nd last year..two years before, you guys won! Please go back and watch your performance @ Pioneer 2010 and Heeray's. HPD was amazing last year @ Pioneer, possibly the best live set in the U.S last year. Now, you are practically making the Committee and the judges think twice about giving HPD first this year even if they deserve it because they know everyone is going to say "Oh man, it was rigged. that's why HPD won again. O." Whoever will win will be the best team there, ok?! Face it, they were better than you last year at Pioneer.

BTW, I know everyone is going to say I'm affiliated with HPd or Pioneer, but I am not. I am just another guy who loves bhangra.

Avneet don't get me wrong, I'm not even going to pretend to know about what goes on and how teams act over there. Regardless of the thread I would have posted the same thing, it was the ignorant and insulting nature of that single "anonymous" persons post that annoyed me, where's a ban hammer when you need one? all I'm saying is at least babc came and said what they wanted as themselves they didn't pretend to be a groupy and complain. I hope whoever that is gets ip checked and is the next idiot to be exposed and since I have nothing useful to actually contribute to this thread.

England out :)

Ok, so now the argument from the opposite side is talent isn't measured when selecting teams anymore. SOOOO Pretty much, all competing teams coming to Pioneer, and I am assuming Warrior as well, are talentless and they were picked based on their connections. Good to know.

This is a joke.

YEA it is VERY HARD for new teams to get a shot. I think we all know this. And it sucks and it's discouraging and in some ways, unfortunate. But sometimes you need to crawl for a long while before you can walk. I remember when Bhangra Empire was rejected left and right from competitions before we found our place in the scene- no matter how many committee members we collectively knew, it did NOTHING for us. We would get rejected and just try for the next one.

The thing that pisses me off the most is how you are sitting there saying the winners will only win because of who they know. Is that how BABC placed at these comps last year???

And there was never a day when comps were laid back. ACTUALLY in California specifically, Competitions like DDA, Nachda Punjab, Davis, even Bruin I believe, would allow their home teams to compete at their comp and GUESS WHAT??? Their teams alwayyysss won lol.. it sucked BUT that didnt stop outside teams form applying and trying and doing it for the love/fun of it, even when they had no chance in hell to win.

Also back to what was earlier said remember you never WIN because of you know atleast at many comps its harder to do because 1. some comps will drop the highest/lowest judge's score right? so what do you people think thats for? its to prevent bias decisions and scoring.
2. you can get in with you connects and i don't feel that's too too wrong because maybe that's what a new team needed? and where in the application did it say we will pick the team that is best considering past history and such? nowhere that i've seen as a matter of fact it usually just says we as a committee will notify those teams who we deem fit so what does that mean to you?

If you're from California then I'm sure you can recognize there is tension with California comps. At the end of the day I think I can speak for everyone when I say we all are here because Bhangra is a passion that at one point or another we wished you could do forever. Cali has some serious problems dude. Look at the last csun, look at what just happened with Ampd at Nachda. Csun's judges told every team their lighting wasnt good enough and that's why they gave 1st to jajde jawani or whoever. Then nachdas said girls shouldn't do Bhangra. Knowing they chose that judge they still accepted Ampd. Their chances were lowered before they even stepped on stage.

There's alot of shady business going down in Cali comps left n right. I can sympathize a bit because BABC placed 1st last year at this comp and when talk about the comp being rigged surfaced fingers were pointed at them for it. Does that make sense to you? Not me. Im not sure if there is an unwritten rule like Boston has saying that teams that placed have a guaranteed spot the next year but. If you placed first and then applied again only to be rejected wouldn't you be curious or even a bit enraged?

I appologise in advance if this post offended or "pissed" anyone off. But if you read it with a bias attitude please gtfo

Sunny what did they say that you disagree with? Because to say that they are starting shit is a bold statement. Please explain.

1. LMAO Kinnell's post!!! +1
2. This is the second team to whine about not getting accepted into a competition. Seriously, you guys need to stfu and deal with it. Go talk to your team and friends and family cuz an online forum is not going to fix your ego or your rejection.
3. I've never heard of any damage or whatever caused at a competition, but from seeing some of the BABC boys'(not ALL) actions' at competitions like Giant and Bulldog in the past, I would not be thrilled to deal with their team either. Having to put up with loud, vulgar, disrespectful members of a team for the whole weekend is not worth the 8-10 minutes of routine they bring to the stage. A little bit of politeness and mannerisms go a long way.

Good Luck!
