Future Competition Idea

With the Bhangra scene in North America booming i think its about time we set up an annual competition/event for regions to go head to head.

The comp could have the following layout:
3 Categories:
"Live/Dhol"-Live band, 8 male dancers
"Music/Modern"- All guys Music teams and Co-ed teams
"Juniors"- Dancers should be 16 or under
"Girls"-Female dancers allowed to have a male dholi to play along

Teams Selection:
Different Regions apply to the comp for example: Ontario(Toronto, Brampton, Sauga), BC(Surrey,Abbi,Van), Washington, Michigan, Cali, Virginia, Calgary....etc
Each region is allowed to enter 1 team per category
Every region has a committee (coaches of teams from the region) that hold a try out for each category...they select the dancers that they feel would best represent their region

Have Placings 1st 2nd and 3rd in each category and 1st 2nd and 3rd for total team score

This would make for a very unique show because you cant really predict what a certain team is gonna bring to the stage because it will be a mix of dancers from all the teams in that region. I think this can be accomplished very easily and would be a great way to expand the bhangra circuit.
Feel free to add on... and make a list of possible regions

Lets do it! If we could get competition coordinators from each area to all pitch in their time and could raise x amount of money this can easily be done.

Now, competition coordinators get on board with this and lets see this happen. It can be the National Bhangra Competition I would totally go!

What you could do is have a BOB for each region. Like have a competition for teams in northeast U.S., GTA, BC, West Coast, and whatever other regions if there are enough teams. A team like Guardians would prob compete in the Northeast because of the lack of teams in the south east.(i could be wrong on that one but just an example). Then a couple months later, have this competition you're suggesting.

just like Chak De NYC was springboarded off this forum, this comp can be a reality too. just don't give up on the idea and it will happen.

Southeast has enough teams: NC St., UNC, ECU, UF, Guardians, Emory, Wash U, and of course UGA just to name a few. Could make it a "South" region and add Texas. Sounds like a nice idea but I'm not sure how practical it is...

That is a sick idea.....but would require lots of organization/communication from each region ..... but this idea should def be put into action!!!

there would lot of bias picking the dancers plus it be hard to pick just 8 dancers from areas like surrey

Well if this was to happen,( Which I am all for it) it would have to be carefully laid out. YOu would need to plan atleast a year before the show. And it should be done in a way to give all teams a chance. Whether they are newcomers or experienced. It def a great idea. But alot of time and effort would need to be put in it. Not to mention alot of money. But with sponsor and time, it can be done.

A lot of people have talked about this idea and they were several threads on POL regarding having a bhangra league as well. Like most of you said, requires a lot of manpower and organization. I could see something like this happenening within the next 5 years though.

This is a good idea..But how about we take some initiative and make this come true....I think maybe the best way is really having all the promoters contact each other as the first step. And divide the shows regionally. And then basically place all teams in the in mix by region. Of course form a committee.

Now this would be huge. So timeframe I would say is 1-2 years to have this down. But I think that would be the first step. I am willing to jump in. Any one else who is interested??

Cool idea Charanjit, but not practical at all (no offense) ;)

Let's say that 1 person from each of the teams that Tucker mentioned above was selected to form the "Live/Dhol" regional team. How on earth would they practise together? You can't just send videos of the dance and expect the entire team to flow as one piece, formations be spot on, and all dance moves done in the same/similar way. Each person flying or traveling by car many hours to a "central place" to just practise could never happen.

For this reason alone, it would be an impossible to accomplish.

A better idea is to have several regional competitons that would follow into a North America "finals" competition. It would all have to conducted by the same bhangra competition organizor, the judges would have to be universal at each regional competition & the final competition, and dancers would not be seperated from their own teams (since picking 1-2 people from every team to form an "ultimate" team by region would never be possible).

This idea at least could be done, but this would require TONS of planning well ahead of time (especially with sponsorship, judges and their schedules, booking performance halls, etc).

Overall, as much I would like something similar to this happen in the "bhangra competition scene," I never see this happening :p

The dancers from these regions might be waaaay too spread out to be able to practice together. (i.e. East= NJ, NY, DC, Boston? Hella far apart) You'd have to make teams with the best dancers in that region and then the teams gets together for like 2-3 weekends (retreat/camps) and make the set and practice. Then compete in late summer. Or something

Cool idea though, see BC vs. South vs. Toronto vs. SoCal etc

And teams with literally best of the best dancers bound to sweet

Even with the "best dancers".. coordinating everything that a team does in a 7-8 minute routine, practicing the dance/dance moves to perfection, coming up with formations as a group and making sure they transition flawlessly, cordinating all of this with dholis/chimta players/singers, etc.. could NEVER be done in 2-3 weekends of practise. Especially if this is supposed to be the "best of the best".. you don't want a half-ass routine/effort.

My 2 cents,

I agree with basim. A regional playdown bhangra comp would be too hard and there would be too many routines not worthy for the best of the best. I like his idea of hetting a champion or two from each region and then going somewhere to battle it out. That actually how the Y-league (soccer) works and it has been a success. Still it would take tons of time to organize this.

P.S. something that this could evolve into could also be an actual; international comp (indian, canadian, american teams etc.) which would be too ill (wayyy into the future)

awsome idea, but I dont think a region liek surrey or even toronto could decide on sending just one team:p Uncles would scrap it out

or we could step up and rep the region instead of the state ;)
