Whoa, whoa, whoa, lets get this started. This is directed to mariam and everyone else to understand my point of view.
Are you serious? Do you believe that bhangra is bringing you closer to the language and the culture of punjab? Do you think that this cultural dance and its language is an accurate description of what the culture entails? If YOU are getting your appreciation, cultural affliation, and ties through BHANGRA, it is not only a disservice to punjabis, it is an insult. That is to say, if an indian would understand western culture, through rap, hip hop, pop music, or whatever generic types of art there is.
If you are trying to understand the language and context to use it in, through bhangra boli's, that is a highly problematic route you are taking. Mariam, you said "im hating yo" and that "im negative". No elder would have a problem with my statements. No other person who witnessed western kids laugh, make fun and taunt punjabi born immigrants here, would say that. Or for the majority crowd, who show pity and a sense of superiority to those immigrants who come here. The same immigrants who say, you see a bhangra crowd, but nobody in the crowd practicing the lifestyle they drain fun out of.
If YOU want to appreciate bhangra boli, through a real cultural mean, learn the language in the right context. Learn it through history books, learn it through documentries, who will show that shaan means more than honour, shaan means something distinct to our region, and what shaan entials.
The long criticism of bhangra has been its loss of meaning, and those who support it, their participation in cultural dilution. If bhangra's orgininal meaning was to celebrate prosperity, there is none to celebrate anymore, why not understand that. Why not udnerstand, even if punjabi culture has been pimped out to bhangra which is now an entertainment industry, why not understand its lack of ability to create real connections. Why not understand that those 'outsiders' (dont bullshit me, its not only non-punjabi reading translations) if they have appreciation, learn the true meaning of punjabi culture through a respectable mean.
Mariam, YO, your appreciating punjabi culture through Bhangra? Your learning culture through an art form that has been diluted. You shouldnt sit down and be depressed, you shouldnt be supporting another avenue to these kids who could care less about a culture if it didnt include dancing on a stage. The punjabi community needs to nuture a project that will incoude the full scope of punjabi culture, where the kids can gain an appreciation for the wholistic nature of our land, not some entertainment industry who has raped a cultural art. Mariam YOU may be mad that I speak like this, think about the people who once coudl identify with the culture, but no longer can because bhangra hs diluted it.
Think about those who have to listen about punjabi's pride being in how much they can drink/
Think about those who have to listen about punjabi's and their appreciation for the figure of a woman.
Think about those who have to listen about punjabi's cant live without goat and whiskey.
That comes from bhangra, that is what makes me mad. Your anger and your support for this highly problematic yet influential industry is what upsets many people. Your anger is in my notion, my anger is in the lifestyle you support.
You guys do your thing, but when I read people being so excited, if anyone with ANY TRUE concern with the youth today, and how they have pimped out a once true cultural art, they would be as disappointed to read the fact that people are jumping for joy so their understand parts of their language.
Its sad, but continue on... Have your fun.
I hope no mods delete this without good reason, as it should be a good precautionary warning to those reading this thread, and their highly problematic assoication they are creating.
Take care,
Summinder Singh
