Hello BTF!
First of all we would like to Thank everyone for all the suggestions and resumes that we recieved from a number of candidates.
After reviewing all the application we are very happy and honoured to announce our Judges Panel for our First Ever Bhangra Competition!!
Neeli Grewal-:
Neeli is Canadian Born, yet attached to Punjabi roots and culture since birth. Her passion for dance began at a very young age and since she has been involved in dancing, competing, and teaching Punjabi folk dance for years. Being coached and guided by some of the most prestige Bhangra dancers has left her with a strong knowledge about Bhangra. Being a young female in the Punjabi community empowered her to continue to spread skill and knowledge to other young females who have the same passion.
Neeli is currently an Executive member of Nach Balliye Organization, an organization that has been established to promote Punjabi culture and express social issues amongst women in the South Asian Community through dance. With her experience in the industry of Punjabi dance, she has had the great oportunity to mobilize young females to become a part of Nach Balliye and help bring awareness through dance with events such as Lohri for Her and Choti Miss Panjaban. In addition, she is a Community Development Coordinator with the South Asian population in at risk communties. With 10 + years of experience and active involvement with Bhangra and gidha her mission has become to serve back to the young females in the community and empower them and guide them to embrace punjabi culture and help sustain punjabi boli.
Sheel Mehta
Sheel Mehta has been dancing Bhangra for a total of 6 years, and has danced at 20+ competitions all over the United States and Canada. Sheel started learning Bhangra during his first year at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and continued to dance for all four of his years (2006-2010) at VCU. During his time on VCU Bhangra, Sheel was privileged enough to help the team place a total of 16 times, and help captain the team to a first place at the first annual Elite 8 Bhangra Competition. Other than VCU, Sheel has danced competitively on music with his friends from the D.M.V. area on Joshiley Jawan Bhangra team. Lastly, Sheel has competitively danced live Bhangra with Pyare Putt Ankhiley and Lalkaare Sheran De, both of which are based in the Metropolitan D.C. area. Throughout all of his experiences, Sheel has formed a strong love for traditional, folk Bhangra, and hopes that some form of it will live on as teams continue to make the folk dance more exciting/entertaining on the Bhangra circuit!
Cherag Selhi
Cherag Selhi has been dancing Bhangra for the last 8 years and has competed in the North American circuit with Boston Bhangra, Northeastern Bhangra, Boston University Bhangra and FAUJ. As a co-founder and captain of FAUJ, Cherag is integral in teaching/training dancers and sets the standard of execution for the rest of his team. He has played a critical component in the team's recent successes at a number of competitions in only 2 years. In addition to competing, Cherag gives back to the community by hosting Bhangra workshops in the local Boston area where his unique teaching ability has allowed completely new dancers to enjoy the essence of a folk dance. Cherag has also been playing Dhol for the last 5 years and was trained by Punjab's renowned Kaka Dholi. As a judge, Cherag has an eye for detail, an appreciation for both the folk and modern elements of Bhangra and years of experience to draw from.
