Hey everyone,

I was reading the "Community Service/Seva at Competitions" post, and I was wondering "What if the competition by itself were community service oriented." I've only been following the bhangra scene for about a year and a half, though this is my fourth year as a dancer. I don't know which competitions are service oriented (other than AVAP-which I only found out because Arjun told me), but I have the theory that if the competition itself (that is without the competitors needing to do any community service) is community oriented, than the attitude of the competitors might change.

The idea somehow led me to this vision I have of throwing a competition in the NY/CT/NJ tri-state area, on a university campus location (preferably residential campus). I envision the proceeds would be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. https://www.stjude.org/stjude/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f2bfab46cb118010VgnVCM1000000e2015acRCRD The idea came from when I was getting my state emergency medical technician certification-which is a long story. The mixer could start off with a speech from a St. Jude representative and child receiving treatment, or even a child who's finished treatment. The competitors could make cards to the kids (though that might interrupt with my "competition by itself, without competitor needing to do service" idea... but whatever!) Oh yeah, and of course dancing.

When I say "beginning stages," I mean that I literally dreamt this up within the past 3 hours. I know about sponsors. I know about hotels. I could type up an application by the time I complete this post (slight exaggeration... but you all get my point). I have an idea on how to do a bunch of things that I'm leaving out of this post (its 5AM... gimme a break). I know what I'd want from organizers if I were a competitor.

But I've never thrown a competition before. I've helped organize school/community service events, but nothing to an extent like this. If I get help, what can I estimate to be the time between beginning ideas and actual competition day? Any ideas-other than the obvious? Anyone within the tri-state area willing to help. Private Message me, or just post here I guess.

Competition name-Nachne di Raat (p.s. Gabar, you're the man!!!)

I'm thinking there's going to be no way in hell this event could take place before the end of the season. Unless I pull a miracle-but I'm not Jesus, so I'm not sure if I'm willing to take the chance. So I'm thinking late November competition-this way nothing's rushed, everything's planned accordingly, and if something goes wrong my team and I have time to fix it.

Also, Rajkaran-what I'd need most from local teams is for them to apply, compete, and ATTRACT A CROWD. In order for us to donate money, we need to earn money. Local teams will bring crowds=> Crowds will bring money. Also, if I have people from local teams helping me, then it'd look bad if those local teams wind up competing. Already AEG, BX Bhangra, and probably SMD (Navi and Faroghe, you now I'm dragging both of you into this right?) wouldn't be able to compete.

Sulman, I'll listen to whatever you say. And if I don't agree with it, we'll sit there and argue until the issue is resolved and we're both happy. You're not leaving me!

Umm... that's all my thoughts for now.

Even if any of these teams don't compete, I'd have them as exhibitions as crowd pleasers.

Joe,

Awesome idea, I dont have experience in putting comps together, but because this is going to be a community service type event, and you need any sort of help, feel free to ask for help, im 100% sure that there are people who will help for an event such as this, and we know that from a few of the responses you have gotten already, and most importantly i would like to assist you in any sort of way from the west coast that i could, because community outreach is one thing i'd like to see more of, and be apart of.

I'm not quite sure how long I'll be dancing-but in the event that I, and everyone else who will be helping out, will not be dancing around the time that the competition comes around, these teams will definitely be exhibition acts.

If you work with local community centers, you may be able to make a deal like "Offer 3 hours of community service and receive free tickets to the show (Limit first 200)" or something. You'll have to work out a system with charity centers around town
