Practice Time

haha we'd skew your average really badly. So starting around 3-4 months before we get started, and half of our guys drive 400 miles and spend the weekend in either miami or gainesville. We do this for 2 weekends in each month. so we pretty much have 6-8 practices period. And our practices probably last 8-10 hours. I remember we all went out after a show once, got retarded, then practiced at 4 AM after breaking into University of South Florida's campus. that was for boston.

SGPD is jsut too intense we could never practise as many hours as they do.

On average we go about 3 days a week for 2.5-3hours. And the 10-12 days before the competition we have practises everynight but they are a bit shorter about 1.5-2hours, b/c this is crunch time and we walk into practise, everyone shuts up, we get what we need to get done and leave. While before that everyone fools around and I have to yell 'LISTEN' every 10 min lol...:p

for ecu bhangra last year...we practiced for literally about 1 1/2 hours for 4 out of the 5 weekdays...and before competitions...we'd practice 2 hrs every single weekday and 4 hours on the weekends.

this year...we have sooooo many new people and it means that as captain, i reallyyy cant treat this team the same. i have to push the young ones who are completely new to bhangra harder and expose them more - and at the same time i hvae ot make sure i dont necessarily overwork them or burn them out to the point it becomes a job to do bhangra.

this year we practice from 7-9 in a smaller dance room where we work on our execution in set spots (everyone spread out)...then when we're through w/ our work there...we move to the big dance studio and practice from about 10 - 1130 every weekday. this is due part because thats when we get the big studio..and also the 1-2 hours we get in the small studio relalyyy make a big diff. b/c instead of wasting time...we learn the song we need to and perfect the execution of the moves...formations are put into play during the second part of prac...so far it's been working (kinda)..and i like thi smethod for a new and young team. we had 8 seniors graduate out of 12 dancers :( but nonetheless even with 8 new dancers, im very impressed on the motivation that our new freshmen have, and the work ethic that they've put up...these guys/girls just dont want to learn the move, they wnat to perfect it, put nakhra in it, go above and beyond how it's done, and to help the team in any way possible. no one complains about their spots on stage, they work their hardest equally at practice whether theyre 1st or last joridar...which is something i absolutely love about this team.

For Truskool Folk, we had our first full team practice the night before the competition till 4 AM. Yeah, it showed on stage at CSUN 2009. The same will apply to Lalkaarey Jehre Maardey performances at Texas and All-Stars. If there is one thing we excel at, it's procrastination.

I hope every1 on AEG reads this thread....so ppl can stop complainin everytime they have to do multiple run thrus at a once a week practice on sundays from 1-7.......

Also, how do the team captains handle absence or lateness.....say some1 that doesnt come to 3 to 4 out of the 8 practices before a comp....or some1 that late 5 to 6 outta the 8......

Having dancers out of state makes things wikd challenging for everyone on the team, leading to longer practices.
i wish we could practice as much as some of the teams mentioned--mad fun but peepz dont have the same dedication and bhangra talent is minimal around boston. :-\

preetyyy much like every team..practisee about 4-5 times a week roughly 2-3 hourss and when theres like 10 days left everyday for like whatever time. the key thing we did was 3 run throughss all out in a row then you get water. if ANYONE messes up start all over.

We have really hectic schedules, so sometimes we end up MIA until like a month or two before a competition :-\ We can only practice on Sundays for about 4 hours but we add days here and there. Even with only 8 girls, for TBYF, our first full team practice was the night before the competition.

that's def what annoys me the most...we have ppl on our team who walk in late cuz theyre pledging, working, etc but its so hard doing formations properlly with ppl missing...plus you have to spend extra time teaching them whatever they missed...we have abt 6 extra dancers on the team so if ppl dont come, they dont dance simple as that

If someone is late, we tack on that time to the end. So if even one person is ten minutes late we go ten minutes longer (we max out at half hour though). If people have unexcused absence, we add half hour for everyone who did show up (So they're pissed at the no show) and fine the no show (so they're pissed).

Money + time = pretty effective way to get people to show up on time.

You collect $20-50 deposit on the first practise day... And deduct fines out of that. After the competition, you return whatever money people have left.

That's how you fine 'em
