Tips on Getting Better

Hey guys,

My name is Kuljit and I'm currently on a Bhangra team out here in States. This is my second year on the team and I've yet to be selected for a Comp team. I haven't really prioritized Bhangra that much before (which is on me). However, I've recently gained quite a bit of inspiration and want to become the best dancer I can be. My captains and teammates have told me that watching Choreo videos and doing them again and again is the best way to improve. I am definitely going to do this, but if you guys have any other advice/tips for me to use so I can improve, I would greatly appreciate it. Any practice schedules, tips, websites, videos, or any information would be of great help!

Thanks in advance!

Hey man! Thats awesome that youre motivated to get better. Some things I like to try are watching other teams I enjoy and then practicing some of their choreo to pick up new stylistic elements or improve form for certain moves. If its a detailed thing like wanting to do jhummar better, Ill watch some of my favorite jhummars from videos and then try to mimic dancers I think ripped it.

Thats just a quick tip, but theres plenty you prolly could search on here about improving stamina, form, nakhra, etc. The best way to get better tho is to keep at it with making vids and getting feedback that you consciously work on!

So what worked for me is first I tried to dance clean with good form by completely eliminating energy from the equation. I picked a couple dancers in the circuit who had my body type and tried to copy exactly what they did (arm angles, flow etc). This means learning choreo that they performed and then slowing down both my video as well as their video to 0.25x to figure out exactly what I was doing differently than them. Once I reached a point where I was dancing clean, then I added nakra and energy back into the equation by figuring out little things that top dancers did to make them look good (head flicks, head movements, stage presence, using your whole body to dance etc). I hope that helps!

Thank you for the advice! I've been watching a lot of SPD lately - I'll defintely be trying to emulate them (as hard as that will be lol)

Thank you! Definitely helps - if you have any specific videos you used that helped you out I'd love to watch them and practice with those!
