My uncle got held up, strip searched, because a lady didn't want to board the same plane as him. Why didn't he get any $? Sure he didn't prosecute, but come on. I don't understand our judicial system. Sure some white folk can get a little out of line, but $240,000 for having to cover his shirt? damnnnnnn. I'm not complaining about the compensation for racial profiling, but that's a lot of money for something not deserving of that much money. That's like the time a woman put her coffee between her legs while driving, took a turn, coffee spills on her legs, she gets burnt, and sues mccdonalds and wins a couple million for their coffee being too hot. WTF?

LoL I actually did some research on the McDonald's case in a Law class I took.
There is a lot more to that story than you hear in the media.

The lady was burnt so badly that her skin was melted to her clothes and it took a lot of surgery. When she called MCD's asking them to compensate her for the 30,000 in medical bills MCD's pretty much said fuck off.

She took it up to a lawyer and in court it turned out that the same MCDs had several complaints of the coffee being too hot and had been notified several times by the government to lower their coffee temperatures. The reason they were keeping the temps high was to make the coffee aroma stronger which would in essence bring in more customers.

When they brought in a dead body in the court room they stuck out its hand poured a cup of MCD's coffee at the temperature it was during the accident. The coffee went straight through the corpse's hand and made a hole in it.

Thats how hot the coffee was and thats how much McDonalds didn't give two fucks about it.

I am not too sure that we are talking about the same case but in this case particularly the lady only walked away with enough money to pay her medical bills. This was the more famous case though.

As for the whole profiling issue, the Muslim guy had a large following to back him up. The biggest name behind him was the ACLU. These days the ACLU is only interested in cases that 'fit the profile'. I had a Muslim friend who was profiled and arrested on campus. The ACLU called him up and asked him if he was Arab, when he said hew as Cambodian the ACLU pretty much said NVM see ya.

When you get in a position where you need justice, it is very hard to attain without money or connections.
I know it sucks. This basically means two things.

If you want justice you either
1)Become a lawyer
or
2)Get rich

hi guys-
don't you think that such a large amount of money as compensation could be a way of making a statement against this kind of racial profiling? and a way to deter other airlines from making a big scene whenever someone wearing/saying/doing anything remotely arab tries to board a plane? i think the only way that the legal system can make a statement about this kind of profiling is by taking these kinds of steps to prevent stupid airline behavior in the future. giving out large sums of money is the only way to get a message across in a money-driven society like ours, and this way other airlines will realize they can't treat people this way without any consequence.
just a thought from a first year law student :)

Yeah that's true, but I'm not sure if $240,000 is enough money to really affect the airline that much. But I could definitely see that if it were a larger sum, then the airlines would probably be more open-minded in the future.
