Man, in the back of my head I felt as if many unfortunate things would start to happen because of the opening of the Olympics. I just believed that NOT everyone in this world would be captivated by the spectacle last night in China. I was right:

Georgia has declared a state of war against Russia b/c of invasion of Russian forces into the Separatist-backed (Russian supported) province of South Ossetia. This is going to be full scale and both Bush and Putin, who are at the Olympics have already discussed what to do. This DOES NOT look good for anyone, and I hope the US does not get involved with Military intervention.

Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe is close to sharing power with Morgan Tsvangirai, and that deal is being aided by the South African President in Zimbabwe. I am strongly opposed to Mugabe, and as bad as it sounds, I am skeptical of this deal working out. It would be great if it does because there has been too much murder and corruption, but Mugabe seems to be doing this so that the rest of the African continent get off of his back.

2 Americans were stabbed last night in China at the Olympics. 1 of them unfortunately died and the other is still recovering, however both are relatives of the Coach for the US Volleyball team. The person who stabbed both jumped off of a Tower and killed himself. Ridiculous man.

Oh and all those fireworks, as magnificent as they were, probably didn't do a whole lot to keep the smog out of the city...

You are not kidding Nikhil. This has been an unbelievably news worthy weekend already.

The situation in Georgia is especially interesting and note worthy, as Georgia is a huge ally of America, and actually has the 3rd highest troop count in Iraq in support of the "war on terror". So their sovereignty and protection is unbelievably important to America and to the war in Iraq. America's response to this situation will be interesting to watch. Their have already been 1500 casualties as of Saturday morning and this situation could quickly escalate with various allies stepping in and demands being made. We can only hope their will be a diplomatic solution to this problem, and that Russia and Georgia can resolve their dispute without a drawn out war. Israel may also involve itself in this conflict and take this situation to another level.

To add to your other news stories:

John Edwards admitted to having on affair on his terminally ill wife and has received a lot of backlash already for his actions, especially as he claimed to be all about morality and loving his wife. It is no surprise he admitted to the affair yesterday, so his story would be ignored in favor of the Olympic coverage.I am just thankful he didn't win the Democratic nomination, because he would have handed McCain the election with this news.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was in prison for violating terms of a pending court case. He was released on bail, only to be charged with 2 felony counts of assault upon his release- only furthering the mess that is Detroit. And he refuses to step down.

About the Georgia Russian conflict: The numbers differentiate depending on which country you ask. I previously did not know exactly where South Ossetia was located before this and I realized it is a significant portion of Central Georgia. I can see how this is going to be an even greater conflict b/c of Ossetia's geographic location deadlocking it into the heart of the country. Additionally I fear that fighting is going to spread outwords from Georgia, into the neighboring countries of Turkey, Syria and Iran just to name a few. The fact that Georgia is a Pro-West Ally in the midst of many a country who are not exactly in line with Western idealization may propagate this beast of a conflict even more. What will be interesting to see is the simultaneous rebellion from the other separatist state of Abkhazia.

You are right. Georgia's geographic location plays a huge role in this conflict. Sadly, it seems inevitable other Eastern European countries will involve themselves or will be forced to become involved simply because of where they are positioned. The western and Israeli influence is also unbelievably important, because America and Israel will have a huge stake in the outcome of this conflict.

That opening ceremony was by far the best spectacle of events I've ever seen... The dude who put the whole thing together deserves a lot of credit, I could not change the channel because I was in awe of how they did everything... and I was watching the replay at 2:30 AM! The Chinese put to shame every opening ceremony in history... A 500ft LCD screen? are you kidding me?

John Edwards did what most politicians do, nothing new there... We hold these people on a pedestal, but they're just like everyone else... They make mistakes... He's a billionaire, his wife isn't going anywhere... Just like Hillary didnt leave Bill because he was president...

The killing of one American in Beijing is sad, but there was nothing the Chinese police could have done, it was completely random and the dude was kinda crazy... Whats up with asian people these days, the dude on the bus and now this guy... Not trying to be racist or anything, just a coincidence i guess that both guys were of asian descent...

Virginia Tech has produced some of the best rookie wide recievers in the NFL right now... Eddie Royal(Denver), Josh Morgan(49ers) and Clowney(Jets) had monster weekend games and are getting rave reviews... GO VTTTTTTTTTT....

Brett Favre hasn't changed his underwear for 3 hours, as per espn! Updates coming soon...
