AKD (UNC)'s line-up for this year, just because they do have bhangra teams!

BU Chankaar
Delaware Kamaal
Duke Daal Bhaat Shak Raas
Duke Dhamaka
Emory Sitara
Penn State Ghaamudyaz
UVA di Shaan
VCU Ricochet Raas
Wolfpack Bhangra

Any predictions on placings? All teams compete in the SAME category for 1st/2nd/3rd. Anyone going to the competition? It'll will be hell entertaining for sure.

Hahah no. I've noticed that Raas Team names are hella more creative than Bhangra Team Names. Raas names include: Big Red Raas (Cornell), Raas N Roll (UCB), DangeRaas (UIC), Toys R Raas (UIUC), Raas Malai (NYU, though I think someone else stole it too), EntouRaas (UMBC).

I'm looking forward to seeing VCU's Raas Team - haven't seen them perform yet. Duke Raas is a phenomenal and versatile team (the girls are fine too!) - they pay attention to details like no other. Penn State Raas use to be unbeatable 2 years ago with their incorporation of hiphop styles, but an entire new team took over last year and they flopped at Dandia Dhamaka. If a Raas team is to place, I'd put my money on Duke.

Back to bhangra, it seems the bhangra teams in order of increasing traditionality is: Duke < Wolfpack < UVA. I wonder if they would place a traditional bhangra team in an all-out competition like this. lol

one word...nope

real bhangra teams come here to have fun and compete for 2nd/3rd. Its just like all fusion comps...its nearly impossible to win as strictly a bhangra team.

So, if a bhangra team is to place, it would probably be Duke Dhamaka then. Maybe Wolfpack. I make these assumptions from what I have seen in past choreography for these teams. Would you agree?

Didn't DRP goto BOB (a Raas/Garba comp) and win Overall Champs?

BOB is a Raas, Fusion and Bhangra competition. There are prizes for each individual category and one for overall. I wouldn't consider DRP a traditional team - they are clearly a modern team. Three teams reppin' Bhangra last year was 3D, DRP and MSU Girls and the most traditional one, 3D, would have been hardpressed to place against fusion and raas teams in the overall category.

See how bhangra teams are becoming more and more traditional? Raas and Fusion are essentially going to the opposite direction with becoming more modern.

For clarification, this is VCU Raas, not VCU Bhangra. Have you guys seen this team perform?

Nikhil or Havish, is your raas team new? Where have they competed before? Do you guys know?

VCU Ricochet Raas is currently in its first full year as a team. We started last semester just doing a local vcu performance. We were accepted into "So You Think You Can Naach?" Competition in ATL but couldn't go because we had two of our guys gets injured before the competition so had to drop out. AKD will be our first competition and the whole team is really excited about it. And yes I will be dancing. I will post up a video of the performance for everyone once we get back from AKD. We were also accepted into Raas Chaos this year which is the Raas version of Bhangra Blowout also held at GW.

So whoever is coming to AKD, please help support us!
