Just wondering, I really want to know what people have to say about this, Do you prefer watching all guy/ girl teams or Co ed teams? I personally extremely dislike watching co ed teams nothing to do with gender that's just how I feel it looks really odd to me honestly

I mean mines would be all guys- all girls,

There's soo many girls who are amazing dancer's but let's not forget there's another dance Giddah that I honestly feel like has dissepeared, I can't remember the last time I saw a giddha performance outside of Punjab regardless though that's just me everyone is titled to their own oppinion

It all depends on the members of the team, location, and convenience. If a team is formed and wants to be co-ed, but there aren't enough females/male dancers in the area, a better option would be to try to go all male/female. It all depends on availability.

I don't really have a preference for having a single gender vs. co-ed. There are out there teams that are good and bad regardless of how they are made up. Considering that some of the best teams out there have been co-ed including Empire, VCU, Duniya, UNC etc., it doesn't really make sense to judge a team and say you don't like them just because they are co-ed or whatever else.

I'm not judging any single team at all
All those teams you said they have great dancer's lets not forget sgpd/tag that was the best co ed performance ive ever seen but I still don't prefer watching it, just doesn't look right to me I don't know what else way to put it honestly. Regardless like I said everyone has their own opinions

If its a good performance, its good, regardless of gender.

My opinion has nothing to do with gender I'm not sexist in any way shape or form if that's what you were trying to say

Whichever team performs better honestly. But I must say, I used to enjoy watching co-ed until a lot of teams became a carbon copy of VCU.

This is what drove me away from enjoying co-ed teams.

That definitely drove me even farther from not enjoying it haha I feel majority of them are all carbon copies of each other

I think in the past year that's not really fair statement. Empire, DRP, UNC, Cornell, 3D, Cal, CMU, etc are all very very different types of teams and not really VCU copies (Cal and UNC are closest, but still not the same anymore). How many active girls teams can you name? 4, maybe 5? That's a smaller pool, easier to distinguish and build identity. There are 30-50 active coed/college teams that compete every year, and only a handful have experience and resources to do something unique. The rest will copy proven ideas and concepts.

I think "copying" VCU's legacy has as much to do with an audience judge's expectation of what co-ed teams do (i.e. guy girl cutesy interactions) as what the teams want to do themselves. No one says a folk or traditional team is a 'carbon-copy' of pau or shivchand or whatever, they say 'damnnn that was what bhangra should look like' or some other nonsense. If you prefer watching guys perform bhangra over girls that's totally fine, and historicaly that's what it's been. But too often that preference translates to 'every college team is trying to be VCU' and that's unfair. Judges reward cleanliness and execution, that's why it happens.

i think you get what gsimz is trying to say, the majority of the coed teams do look similar. not all but a lot.

I was modifying my post after you responded, I think it's still an unfair statement. All-guys teams tend to be a little more diverse because theres no gender restriction on them forcing them to do guys/girls. You're more free to do formations and choreo by jodis/colors/whatever because theres no intrinsic differentiation between dancers. I'm not disagreeing per se, but I think it's unfair to say they all look the same and then turn around and not argue that there are maybe 10-12 all guys teams that are unique, and the rest are pretty much some variation. That's not that different from co-ed...there are just more co-ed teams that tend to compete and their skill level is usually lower.

Also I'm gonna call you back, haven't forgotten!

Regardless of being co-ed, all girls, or all guys, I don't think gender should pose restrictions. I agree that they're certainly many more collegiate teams in the circuit, and they have limited sources, but they can push them selves to be just as unique as all guys/all girls teams. Along with the teams you've listed I've seen it with PANJ Co-ed, TAG Co-ed, YPA, Nishani, and Wolverine. All those teams in my eyes, made an effort to present something different in this circuit. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that it can occur with all guys/ all girls teams and I've seen it, but it's less frequent. I think it's more of the thinking that needs to change when creating a co-ed routine.

so between us we've listed almost a dozen teams already...and made my point. A dozen unique co-ed teams and everyone else is basically the same? It's identical to the the all-guys dept in my opinion. Maybe in 2009 this wasn't accurate, but what I'm saying is that in the past year or two co-ed teams have stepped up.

And of course gender poses restrictions! Aesthetically, we dress our guys and girls differently on co-ed teams, so immediately there's an inherent differentiation that affects how we see the performance, how we group the dancers in our visual absorption, etc etc. So now you can say that you tire of that aesthetic, and I would respect that and understand why you prefer single-gender teams, but then we're talking about something different.

On a side-note, what constitutes 'stepping it up'. I just don't understand what it means. Dancing cleanly and with form is folk if you're an all guys team, but boring and vcu-carbon copy if you're a co-ed team? Is it just that teams build their sets in the same boring order (saaps, khunde, formations, jhummar, fast jhummar, jodiyan, dhamaal, phumania, finale?) Is it the choreography being plain and simple?

I think the issue is people just don't like the aesthetic of co-ed, which is fine, but I find the common complaints disingenuous. I'm really hoping someone will step up and explain cause I think it's important to discuss and a much more interesting topic. I'm bored at work, help me out let's have a fun discussion!
