Re: American Bhangra Competition (ABC)

It's actually a competition where teams will be auditioned in the West coast and East coast. The competition will have 4 rounds (auditions, quarter finals, semi finals, and grand finale between west coast and east coast.)

yes your teams need to be present. this whole competition will be taking place over the course of 6 months which will be shown on tv per episode weekly. its like american idol or americas got talent. they'll show a whole season of the championship weekly until they pick out the winner which will be during the grand finale.

Sounds like a cool idea but 6 months when generally all these teams are college teams how is that going to work

seems like it could be a great idea for the bhangra community, but i would really suggest taking some time to speak to organizers of some of the big competitions like WBBC, Idols or Elite. plenty of folks on the forum would be willing to give some pointers, i'm sure.

would hate to see this flop just because you made some avoidable assumptions!

What Im getting from this is, its just multiple compt hosted by the same committee with a ladder style bracket.
Would this mean the teams would have to put together 1-4 different mixes and sets.

Wait so it'll be a weekly thing?

Re: American Bhangra Competition (ABC)

Apologies for any confusion. Let me explain the format

Auditions will be held on the east coast and west coast. There are no limits to the amount of teams that can participate. After the auditions, teams will only need to commit twice and that's if they make it past the audition round. The second and third round will be the quarter finals and semi finals which will take place on the SAME DAY. This will be easier for the teams to travel and complete the process. Once the results are in only 6 teams, 3 from east and 3 from West will be competing in the grand finale. Also take into mind that the quarter, semi, and grand finale will be taking place on weekends only.

To be quite honest, ABC isn't your ordinary Bhangra competition like WBBC or elite. We are taking a new and different approach to the competition where the teams history and journey throughout the competition will be shown on tv for approximately 6 months. Teams will be required to commit only twice after the auditions. I highly doubt that any teams would be willing to give up the opportunity of high publicity.

So each team will have to prepare at least 2 different sets?

Interesting concept.

I think more teams would be interested in participating or making the trip down to Queens for auditions if you had made this announcement much earlier. There are only two weeks until East Coast auditions, and March is already a very busy month for teams with two big competitions coming up. With tens of thousands of dollars in prize money on the line, I'm sure you'll get some great teams, but regardless, it would have benefited you greatly if you had announced this earlier.

All the best to the organizing committee on Jus Punjabi.

Completely agree with Daman, this is a great idea. However, if the teams were informed around decemberish, more teams would've showed up for the auditions. If only this competition was postponed to summer, teams would have had more time to prepare multiple and more innovative routines.

I would love to see it happen especially if it got the big name teams from each coast. Hopefully the $11,000 first place and $7,000 second place prizes will convince the big name teams in the west, (BK,Empire,AG,ABC, Regiment, APD) and east (Fauj, Virsa, Furteelay, AEG, Cornell) to try it (plus some all girl teams SMD &BAR-B). my guess is that just a few mediocre college teams audition and that this event is gonna flop.

I also think canada should be involved. vancouver and toronto teams would add made hype.

The Auditions will be only a 4-5 minute performance. Selected teams will have more time to prepare for the longer performances in the next round.

And given that there are other Bhangra events in March, hopefully the teams will have a good set ready....

Refer : http://www.jusbroadcasting.com/auditions-guidelines/

Canada teams are more than welcome, Jus Punjabi is aired in Canada too....they can enter through the Auditions on any coast.

So, this is just like what Bhangra Idols use to do with their regional qualifying competitions except that the only prize money rewarded is at the final competition. And then have enough performances and coverage of these competitions to fill a few months of television broadcasting.

It's intriguing for sure and I'm curious to see the execution since this is an massive undertaking at a national level with multiple venues and multiple PR efforts to make each of the qualifying competitions viable.

The allure of the prize money is a bit misleading because as lucrative as this may seem, teams will be competing four times to get a shot at that money or any sort of real recognition. Even though the audition may not be as intensive and the quarter finals/semi finals supposedly on one day (though still performed at an auditorium in front, the thought of having everything recorded and possibly aired on TV and the time/costs of traveling to/staying at competitions will still probably mimic a normal competition weekend in terms of stress but without the enticement of placing (since teams merely qualify for the next competition) and prize money.

It'd be great to see the competition help out teams financially in terms of traveling/lodging once they qualify for quarter finals because since teams are limited by the number of competitions they can do whether through time commitment or financially, it may not be worth it for teams to forgo going to other competitions in the semester for multiple qualifying events to a bigger competition, even despite the publicity they may get from it.
