Hey BTF!

Below are ASD's performances at Tashan and BAB 2016! Huge shoutouts to both competitions for having us and providing for great weekends. Also a huge thank you to our liaisons at both comps; Mo, Kayla, and Dilveer, we love you and our mixer Harjot Singh (H96) for the bomb mix! We welcome any critiques and feedback that you all can give us so we can continue growing as a team and put on better performances (feel free to PM if you would like).

Congratulations to UNC Bhangra Elite and Virginia Tech Bhangra for their placings at Tashan and SMD Bhangra (#GirlPower), NEBC, and UVA for their placings at BAB. All teams put on amazing performances and ASD was humbled to have performed with such great talent!

Last, but certainly not least a huge huge thank you to our coaches Vick and Guntas (FS represent) for pushing us to perform such great sets and helping us become the team that we are. We appreciate you both!

Watched you girls form Tashan to BAB and wow what a huge change. I really liked y'all set and it was tailored perfectly to BAB with the folk elements that y'all incorporated. You guys are definitely putting Michigan on the map alongside MBT and Furteelay. I would have to say the biggest critique I have for y'all girls is that you guys do not finish your moves when dancing. The execution of the steps especially in a folk competition like BAB is one of the crucial elements in bhangra. Other than that, there was a discrepancy in dancing ability among your jodi's. When dancing on stage 1 through 16 or 1 through 12 should be on relatively equal levels in terms of ability. There was a big discrepancy, but that takes time and stage experience to build. I think that training y'all weaker dancers a bit more would help you guys improve so much. Half of your dancers also looked like they weren't exactly having a good time on stage and were just going through the motions of dancing. When all of your dancers enjoy dancing on stage the performance just becomes that much better. Recovery on stage is another crucial element that I would say your team needs to work on. I recall at one point during the set at BAB that the green girl slipped and hesitated for a quick moment. Confidence and swag are required when recovering from any mishap and one of the hardest things to master. Congrats to your girls once again and also to your coaches Vick and Guntas. Navu and Harjot y'all ripped it. Megha and Akshaya awesome job to y'all as well. I'm excited to see what you girls and the state of Michigan brings to the circuit this year!

Thank you for your feedback, Howie! Congrats to you and AEG for your second place at GOT :)

Your critiques resonated exactly with what judges said at both Tashan and BAB. Now that our competitive season is over for fall, we will be training our new dancers and standardizing moves so that we will come back as a more unified team in the winter semester. Our newbies have gotten some stage experience now and have seen what a comp is really like so we are motivated to learn from our mistakes and come back stronger at the next competition we go to.

Thanks Howie!

Also wanted to give a quick shoutout to Harjot, Navu, Simo, Vick, and Guntas for giving me such an awesome experience competing with ASD. You're all so hardworking and I've definitely grown as a dancer from being around such motivated people :) I can't wait to see what you girls do next semester! #shernibanke

Congrats on placing!

I agree with Howie's critiques 100%. I'm gonna add my perspective.

I am gonna provide critique on your BAB performance. Start with positive, then go to negative, and areas to improve.

Positive:
Set was tailored to the comp. I enjoyed jhoomer, both the move modifications and the speed. Red was solid and deserved best jodi. I love the the way you guys come off stage. Moves that were supposed to be emphasized were there. There were parts were yellow really looked good, and it looked like they were having fun. Legs looked like they were going up for the majority of the set. Song selection was prime.

Negative:
-Repetitive formations. Start and end were the same. I'm unsure if that was intentional, but it came off as repetitive.
-Dancers forgetting moves. Ending was full of people forgetting moves or forgetting to go down on a squat or forgetting to spin. Yet, it was not only ending. There were multiple points during the set where people were forgetting moves. In conjunction with forgetting choreo, there was poor recovery. This type of error would make me irate as a captain/coach and judge.
-Energy. I should not be able to tell when you are dead. Comes with experience (more on that later).
-Add some more spice. There were points such as jhoomer were I said cool, but in order to move to that next level, there needs to be more of those wow moments. It can be through choreo, nakhra, etc. Take more risks.

Moving Forward:
-Dancer training is the highest priority. Get them more gigs and smaller performances. Any type of performance will help build nakhra and energy. Shernis look up to Navu and Harjot. Try to mimic their nakhra/style. Use them as role models. One thing I can tell you is that they did not get there without putting in countless hours of practice and work.
-Just don't forget choreo. Nothing more to be said there. How I managed to not forget choreo was by watching random bhangra performances. All performances have essentially the same moves, and by watching videos, you are able to commit more to memory.
-PUSH PUSH PUSH. Low energy perpetuates dancer discrepancy when people look tired on stage. From the video, I can tell there are points were dancers just give up. Energy is both a mental and physical game. Look at Bobby Grewal (most of you know him). This guy eats like a tutti. One time he ate a chalupa, whole thing of chicken fires from BK, a taco, a bowl of cereal, and then some fruit snacks before practice. However, he still pushes through to the end (often being the highest energy dancer), and he even says it himself that energy is all the mind. What I love about Bhangra is that I have physically pushed myself more than I ever believed I could. It's all in the mind.

Good luck to you for comps moving forward! The bhangra community in the state of Michigan is looking sharp.

Thank you for the in depth feedback Sahab! We will take all this into account and implement these critiques for the next time we compete :)

Sorry for the delay in posting, kinda late. But very, VERY big improvement from Tashan to BAB. Congratulations to a well-deserved placing and a fantastic performance. Amazing job by the girls and solid work with coaching by Vick and Guntas.
Loved the folk elements of the set, thought that was well choreographed
Thought moves could have had better execution and better extension ---for example, jaandu singhan at the 3:44 mark. Lower arm should be coming across, chest level, from your armpit to the other side of your body. Standardization also needs some work
Thought some of the jumps and moves in the back at times didn’t do as much because they were hidden and not as emphasized by the formationsàsome unnecessarily lost energy on those
seemed like a lot of running around during saaps, formations needa be more pronounced
Energy definitely needs improvement in the weaker dancers, noticeable in the legs from the half mark onwards and even a few moments in the first half
On emphasized moves, needa make sure every girl is doing it. It takes away from the impact of the move if everyone isn’t doing it, and its not like one or two dancers in the front are highlighted so people can’t cheat on those
Loved the contrast around 8:40 with the squats and spins. do more contrasting things in the set with groups and levels (jumps vs squats vs reg moves), itll definitely add more to the set
Loved the choreo
Few mistakes here and there with remembering choreo, which I know will be fixed. I can’t wait to see the damage you guys do in the Spring!!!
