lol a question like this was on a consulting case study book except it had a different twist! ahh
*thinking*
how about something a little harder? this one is easy. you weight 6 on one side 6 on the other, which ever is the lightest you dump those 6 out then split the remaining 6 into 2 groups of 3, again look for the lightest and dump that one out. now your left with 3 so u measure 2 of the 3 if they r the same weight then you know the 3rd ball is the one or if one is heavier then the other then you know that way as wellkinnell said:Here's the first one:
You have 12 balls. Identical except for the fact that one is a bit heavier than the others. You don't know which one. You have a 2 sided scale (you can put two things on both sides) and you can use it only 3 times. How do you find the heavier ball.
Don't look it up. Just think it out. I thought of a few variations for this problem too.
rohit, u can only use 2 of the balls on one side at a time, not 6 on one side and 6 on the other. and u can only use the scale a total of 3 times.....so that doesnt work.Rohit said:how about something a little harder? this one is easy. you weight 6 on one side 6 on the other, which ever is the lightest you dump those 6 out then split the remaining 6 into 2 groups of 3, again look for the lightest and dump that one out. now your left with 3 so u measure 2 of the 3 if they r the same weight then you know the 3rd ball is the one or if one is heavier then the other then you know that way as wellkinnell said:Here's the first one:

Yep, that's it. Now what if I were to tell you that there's more than one way? At least 5 more ways to do this. See if you can figure them out. (Your solution would be 6:3:1)Rohit said:how about something a little harder? this one is easy. you weight 6 on one side 6 on the other, which ever is the lightest you dump those 6 out then split the remaining 6 into 2 groups of 3, again look for the lightest and dump that one out. now your left with 3 so u measure 2 of the 3 if they r the same weight then you know the 3rd ball is the one or if one is heavier then the other then you know that way as well![]()
