I just submitted all of my applications (AMCAS) a couple days ago and my apps have already begun to be reviewed. My cousin is an anesthesiologist - PM me if you have any questions!

Best of luck to you becoming a doctor!

have you looked into the profession ? Things to consider are the lifestyle, the stress, and the education involved.

shadow some doctors to get a feel for the job and lifestyle, make sure to ask lots of questions. medicine is something you gotta think long and hard about doing and should get all the information you can before you get into it. best of luck to you.

I agree with comtondajatt. Medicine is something you need to think long and hard about because of all of the sacrifices you will make. Also you will work a lot and your social life will suffer...but luckily it all depends on your specialty. The ER physicians who are constantly on call and work crazy shift hours won't have much of a social life, however all doctors get tons of vacation time. good-luck to you.

Don't really post on here anymore, but HAD to comment when I saw this thread.

**DO NOT take advice from anyone regarding medicine unless they have been through medical school themselves** (I don't care whether their mom, dad, uncle, brother, cousin, dog, fish or whatever is a doctor)....this thread doesn't even have that many posts and there is so much false info, I'm not going to address all the points.

My advice:
-figure out what exactly happens IN medical school....which is different from....
-what happens as a resident.....which is different from....
-what happens as an attending

-medicine is constantly evolving....find out how....and figure out what the implications are for you
-talk to actual physicians in various settings.......your best friend's dad might be a private practice radiologist in the burbs....he will have a different perspective than an academic general internist at a prominent university medical center....etc.
-figure out what your main motivations are for going into medicine

-after gathering a lot of information, find out what you have to do to get into the best medical school that you can....US MD programs > US DO programs > foreign med schools is the general rule of thumb for residency placement

*4th year med student currently applying to residency programs

if people have any questions, feel free to contact me via PM........but I'm super busy until October, so I may not respond right away.

concur with nav. you need to be way more specific in what you are asking and what you are looking for when talking about the medical profession. there are so many variations within each field that will make the experience different for each practitioner. im currently in my 3rd year doing rotations through this wonderful country of ours, and will have a totally different experience from what nav has, as i am under that foreign med umbrella. but if anesthesia is what you are looking into, its not all glitz and glamour as you have described, from my personal experience working: you dont have your own hours, you are seen as a glorified surgeons assistant, and a lot more of the job is in the hands of the anesthesiologist technicians nowadays, so there is less emphasis on the anesthesiologist his/herself. malpractice for anesthesiologists is also very high, but thats a whole other issue not worth going into right now haha. best of luck though, medicine is a tough and rigorous field, with a lot of hard work, but in the end, no one can take away that feeling the first time you make an impact in a patients life and they genuinely thank you for the work and care youve put in.
