Beats by Dre

Let me tell you another thing, Dre beats are horrible headphones. If you care at all about fidelity and want more than just a fashion statement, you'll get something else.

Out of my tests, beats sound like they've had their mids recessed, and pretty much follow a U shaped frequency curve. They're artificially made to sound good, if by sounding good you like muddy bass, harsh highs, and extremely narrow soundstage. I honestly didn't even want to wear them for more than 2 minutes, let alone listen to music in them.

Do yourself a favor and look at headphones by the following brands (aka ones that actually know about audio....Beats are made by monster (they make those extremely overpriced cables)):

Audio Technica, AKG, Beyerdynamic, Denon, M-audio, Sennheiser, etc.

For earbuds: Etymotic, Shure, Ultimate ears (some are rebranded under the name altec lansing and are cheaper), westone, sennheiser, klispch, akg, head gear.

Take yourself over to http://www.head-fi.org to find out a little more.

The beats aren't terrible but they definitely aren't worth the price. You should look into Audiotechnica M50s. They're 1/3 the price and everything sounds cleaner.... not to mention the soundstage is 100 times better

+1. Great info right there! Search around on head-fi about the Monster "Beats by Dre" in comparison to other in-ear monitors (IEMs) and you'll easily notice how they are inferior (in most aspects) to other in-ear headphones that are much cheaper.

P.S. - Apple headphones suck ass. lol.

Mr. audio expert-ji (GSingh), in your opinion, is it worth upgrading to another pair of headphones from Sennheiser 212 Pros? Something roughly around $100-130

FAR from lol.

if you get good headphones, be prepared to drive them properly, aka a good sound card.

I have the smaller brother of the 212's (the 202's) and they are bass heavy and for the money, they give me a great sound but nothing compared to good studio monitors. They are a real pain to mix with because some frequencies are exaggerated while others are recessed. If you want to get new cans from a mixing standpoint, get some with a flat sound signature.

I got to go to class right now....will continue later...

if you like your bass then get them. but if you want to hear everything then definitely don't get the beats by dre. these headphones are the worst to use for mixing because they don't give "true" sound like studio monitors. If youre looking to use them to make mixes or produce, then look into sennheiser.

Continuing on,

If you can afford to get a decent sound card (your best bet would be an Asus Xonar D1 or DX, or DG(which has a built in headphone amp but slightly underpowered audio chip)), then I say upgrade to studio monitor headphones. There's no point in spending $100+ on headphones if your input is garbage. Just like you can't make a song sound better by converting it from 128k to 320k, you can't get a good sound from a poor source.

That being said: good headphones in your range:

Audio Technica ATH-A700
Audio Technica ATH-M50
AKG K142HD
AKG K271 Mark 2
Beyerdynamic DT770 (get one that's less than 50 ohms, anything more will require an amp to drive)
Denon AH - D1100
M-Audio Q40
Sennheiser HD280
