Beginner - dhol help.

Hi,
im beginning my first dhol lessons in few weeks and I want to buy a dhol. Problem is I don't know anything about dhols. Im looking to spend between 150-200, Could you guys provide some advice on what i should look for in a dhol, what to avoid, what else to consider, etc. Also, where i can find one? Store? Online? I live in seattle and not quite sure where to start. Youre help is appreciated, thanks!

Nice to hear your interest in playing dhol.
If you are taking classes, you should ask your instructor (ustaad) where to buy your dhol and which type in particular.


I would avoid buying it online because those dhols are commercial made, meaning they would be painted and glossy or even transparent. I don't consider those "real" dhols. If you can, get one built from an ustaad from India.


Getting a dhol built to your needs would be your best solution, but shipping it all the way to Seattle would be a mess.
If anything, find a person in your tri-state area selling their dhol. And don't go too fancy either. Just buy a beginner's dhol: plain and simple.

You should try to look for a local store in Seattle, There is probably one that sells indian/instruments. Definitely get a kaali dali dhol, the type of wood is much more sturdier and sounds better than a typical dhol made from lakar (wood). Also, don't hesitate to ask for an extra tirli/dagga, im pretty sure they will give it to you. Hope you get an amazing dhol!

There aren't any stores in Seattle...You gonna have to go up to Surrey to get one for a decent price.


Bawa music has some decent stuff. Can't remember which street its on though.
