Bhangra Circuit Database (BCD) Sneak Preview

Here's a sneak preview of a personal project I've been working on in my spare time. Expect a working database in its first stage in a months time

In its first stage (ETA: March 20th, 2009 to April 1, 2009), it will have the capabilities to add/edit/find/sort bhangra teams, bhangra competitions and bhangra performers (singers/dholis/dancers/captains). The main advantage of this is the ability to easily add data online anytime and anywhere without the need to email your team info to some email address and wait days for it to be added or be forced to download some sort of template and add it.

Feel free to comment on the graphical interface as well!

The template looks pretty good Kinnell. I hope the background won't be plain white though. That will look really unappealing. You could possibly add a button that will clear all fields, which would make repetivie searching a lot easier.

What are you using to create it/publish it? HTML via Dreamweaver? Flash? etc. Also, will the database be in mysql or something? How will you combat the spammers? Will there be sort of admin/moderator that approves all entries before final submission into the database)?

Don't mean to be nosy, just curious.

A+ for you all your effort Kinnell bhai!

That's a sickk idea bro. I can't wait to see the full version of that stuff. As far as the background color goes, I agree that I'm not a fan of using white. I like that red color that you're using for the "Add a Bhangra Team" box.

Straight-up HTML by hand with CSS scripts here and there for clean formatting. Yes, the database programming is php-based and it is a stable MySqL database.

The 2nd stage of the database will be adding "connections" of sorts. Add teams (ie: Guardians of Bhangra) to specific competitions (ie: Boston Bhangra Competition 2008) and adding performers to those teams for those specific competitions (ie: Kush Shah). Every few months, a purge may occur where all information entries without connections will be flagged for review. A competitive performer or competitive team is one that competes.

Spamming would be a huge issue for sure. In the beta tests, access to add and edit data would be password protected (searching/sorting data by team name, team affiliations (ie: DCMPAA), team state, team city..etc would not require a password at all). Another solution is similar to the one you mentioned in that those without password, request an add or request an edit of team information which send me an email or notification asking for approval. At the same time, I want to make this as instantaneous as possible without the backlash of Jhumar Army of West Punjab-like entries (great name, btw).

This looks pretty cool! I think Saleem was working on something similar to this a couple of months back... correct me if I'm wrong? Maybe you guys should collaborate!

Font for the title banner is messy and overly graffiti. It should be bold and expressive (especially with such a busy background, the cleaner the text the better). I like the font in the other places though, it just doesn't work in banner.

Overall it looks good, if you're doing the CSS right then changing little stuff like the 'white background' should be easy and afterthought. Functionality first, web 2.0 aesthetics later.

This is a sick idea. Also it would be a great way for competitions to put up an intro packet straight up onto a site and have teams download it asap instead of linking you to a website. Also akhil, this seems like a sort of mini bhangra-facebook with interactivity. Another thing I would suggest is keep a dictionary of terms, moves, etc. for newbies into the scene to actually appreciate the art-form. BTF probably has a treasure trove of information, so keeping it dictionary or encyclopedia style would be something to look into onto that site and probably make it very appealing(like priyanka chopra). The idea is sick, and is a real good way of references/names and further connect the dancing community. Maybe it could solve saleems family tree issue about the state of Virginia Bhangra....
